JONATHAN WOOKEY Obituary

JONATHAN ANDREW WOOKEY With loving friends and family beside him, Jonny left us far too soon on Wednesday, June 6, 2012. Born January 16, 1990, Jonny leaves behind his heartbroken family: parents Lynda and Ian, sisters Katie and Emma, brother Nick, as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Jonny loved every new and challenging experience that came his way and looked forward to the people and places that only awaited his discovery with joyful and excited anticipation. There was nothing that was out of the realm of the "possible" for him. Jonny was an avid outdoorsman, a talented tennis player and a hard working student. Through his kindness and generosity, Jonny always endeavoured to share what he cared about with others, starting a charity in Grade 3 to send underprivileged children to camp and creating the first environmental stewardship at his high school. In university, Jonny helped found a Canadian Club at St. Andrews and brought competitive ice hockey to the school. He was a mentor and, above all, an open-hearted friend whose care and kindness towards others earned him the respect and love of his peers, teachers, family and friends. He will continue to hold a special place in the hearts of the many people who knew him. Jonny will be fondly remembered at Upper Canada College in Toronto, where he graduated in 2008 and was awarded the Herbert Mason Medal, UCC's highest honour for character, integrity and recognition of community leadership. He also leaves behind a large community of friends at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where he was scheduled to graduate next week with an M.A. in International Relations. Jonny was laid to rest in a private family ceremony on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 in Toronto. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Jonny's life on Thursday, June 21st at 4:30 p.m. at Laidlaw Hall, Upper Canada College, 200 Lonsdale Road, Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Upper Canada College Foundation in the name of the Jonathan Wookey Memorial Scholarship would be appreciated. Donations may be made online at www.ucc.on.ca or by calling 416-488-1125 x2239. Online condolences can be made at www.etouch.ca

I will always remember Jon's wonderful smile and sparkling blue eyes. All the ARAMARK Food Services Staff at Upper Canada College remember Jon for his kind words and happy demeanour, he always took time to greet everyone and ask about their day. Jon was a remarkable young man and will be sadly missed by us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his loved ones at this most difficult time.

It was with great sadness that we received the news of Jon's passing. We were privileged to know him as a friend of our children. He was enamoured with life. Everything was interesting to him, he shone. He believed in the goodness of humanity. We will always his smile, his intelligence and his sense of humour. May you be well.

Jon was one of the very best people I ever had the pleasure to know at the Prep — a boy who had brought more good into the world by age 12 than most of will ever manage in our longer lifetimes. His impact was broad and deep, as is the pain of his passing.

I have never met your son but was very moved by what you wrote about him in the Globe & Mail. My heart goes out to you and your family. What a terrible loss. I cannot imagine what you are going through. What a fine young man he was. My prayers are with you.
