JOY MORTSON Obituary

JOY MORTSON September 9, 1926 - January 1, 2017 After graduating from Victoria University in 1947 with a degree in political science, economics and history (subjects she had been admonished were "inappropriate" for a young lady) she pursued a professional career in one of Toronto's most prominent law firms and enjoyed a life rich in close friends, lively arts and culture and adventurous world travel. Next to family came her love of the land. She lived independently in Victoria Square (Markham) on a remnant of the family farm and until her 88th year maintained a flower and vegetable garden twice the size of a city lot. She was the daughter of Herman and Annie (Collard) Mortson and the elder sister of Margaret (Mortson) Tyndall, who died in 2014. Never married, Joy was devoted to extended family. All four nieces and nephews were at her side in her final hours: Mardi Tindal (Douglas), Paul Tyndall (Lynn), Laurie Bell (Bob) and John Tyndall (Filomena). In keeping with Joy's (always clearly expressed!) wishes, there will be a private family service.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. My grandfather, Clarence Stong, was married to Ethel Mortson and that is my connection to Joy who was part of many family celebrations.

I knew Joy from when I started at the law firm in 1966 until she retired. She was a title searcher when I started and then a law clerk. Joy was a lovely lady and always a pleasant person.

I am very sorry to hear of Joy's passing. She was such a lovely lady. I had the privilege of working with Joy at the law firm. She even did a couple of real estate matters for my husband and myself. Joy had a great sense of humour and we always shared a laugh or two when we'd meet. Sending warm thoughts and deepest sympathy to all her family.
