JOYCE SCOTT Obituary

JOYCE ANNA "SULLIVAN" SCOTT (SOLOMON) Born July 4, 1929 Died May 14, 2017 Our beautiful yellow bird has slipped the surly bonds of earth... soar... sing, yellow bird! Born the year of the Great Depression to Gertrude "Gertie" and Joshua "Josh" Solomon, Mom was an early "conservationist", reluctant to throw anything out that could be glued, mended or repurposed. She had many gifts, not the least of which was her remarkable singing voice (mother "Gertie" was a "Jones" born in Wales, after all!). As early as nine, Joyce was singing at local weddings, bar mitzvahs and church services. She received a music scholarship from University of Toronto and went on to be the featured vocalist for the Leslie Bell Singers which led to a chance meeting with our father, actor/writer, John "Jack" Scott, embarking on a 43-year love affair even though she reportedly "couldn't stand him" when they first met. Spotted by the CBC to star with then unknown singer Robert Goulet on the variety show Showtime in the early 60s, she became a household name in Canada and beyond. Although born on the Fourth of July, Mom was a devout Canadian, preferring to raise her ever expanding brood of four - Laura (Gary/Paul), John (Milyda/Lisa), Kate (John) and Melissa (Thom) on their beloved Rouge Park farm in her "home and native land", where they took in many "strays" - animals and people, alike - and where she remained until her death, poignantly on Mother's Day. Having faced her health challenges in recent years with fierce determination and a "warrior spirit", "Grannie Annie", as she was affectionately referred to by nine grandchildren (Sarah (Karl), Josh, Jason, Madeleine (Luke), Hannah, Scott, Spencer (Anna) Eliza and Ava) and six great-grandchildren (Gabriel, Julian, Aubrey, Noah, Tristan and Aspen), maintained a stiff upper lip until the end - never, ever complaining and always supportive, loving and loyal. A Celebration of Joyce's Life will be held with family and friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please recognize her contribution to the performing arts in Canada by donating to PAL Toronto. http://paltoronto.org/product/donate/ or her love of animals by donating to the Toronto Humane Society. https://www.torontohumanesociety.com/support-us/tribute-giving Tood-li-doo, Mom!

Melissa,

I'm sorry to hear of your Mom's passing.

I only learned about this the other day. I was listening to the songs of Robert Goulet during the Christmas Season and remembered how you shared with me that Bob co-starred with her on Showtime.

May the fond memories you and your family have of her never dim and forever warm your hearts.

God Bless.

Sincerely, Frederick Vance

I learned recently that Joyce had passed away, and I wish to say how very sad to hear this. Joyce was part of our (the Cable Kids') from the 1940's. As our father was Musical Director on CBC Radio and TV during the Leslie Bell Singers programs and then when she joined with Bob Goulet to co headlne on 'Showtime' I was by that time, in my teens and was one of the dancers. When Joyce became pregnant, the censers would not allow her to bee seen full on and had to hide her behind chairs and other items!!! I last saw Joyce at my father's 75th BD Party and took these last 2 pictures.(I also took the one with Mary and Harry) Am I correct n saying that this is Laura with her Mum and my dear brother Nairn? Nairn passed away Sept 15th 2005. Barbara, and Dodi also gone. My father,Howard Cable, passed away March 30th 2016. I remember Joyce's beautiful voice and versitility and her fun repore with Bob. And even though I was very young when I first met your Dad, I was struck by the dashing figure and his marvelous resonating voice. I hope you like these pictures, your Mum was so lovely and a joy to be around. As I was only 15 when I joined 'Showtime' Joyce was always there for me when my nerves kicked in. It was LIVE televison after all!!! My thoughts are with you and was so very happy to hear that your Mum was such a advocate for animals as I am also. I posted all this on FB btw. Love and Hugs

I only learned today about Joyce's passing. I am so sad as I worked with her on the CBC television show Showtime, as a dancer. Also, Joyce sang at our wedding and she took pride in the fact she brought Laurie & I together. She was loved dearly by the Showtime cast and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. My condolences to her family.

I worked with Jack and Joyce in CBC radio - and loved them both. They were both 'the best' in their chosen fields and also as loving human beings. It was a privilege to know them and they were a great boon to the theatrical community. Corinne Langston

I knew Mrs. Scott first as a patient, then as the mother of my friend and her daughter, Melissa. Although I wasn't able to keep in touch in recent years, my memories are of celebration, beauty, laughter, and love. Her passion for her husband and their children was palpable and exemplary. Well done, Mrs. Scott!

I will miss the front yard conversations during her regular visits to Melissa's home. Joyce had the most wonderful stories, an amazing lady that lived such an amazing life. I am so lucky to have been introduced to her by her equally amazing daughter, Melissa, (obviously "amazing " runs in the family) my neighbour and friend,

I am so sorry that dear Joyce has passed on to more greatness and beauty. It will take a long time for you all to settle in and you all need each other so much at this. My father enjoyed the Tommy Hunter show and he and mom remembered her from years back. My dad was Welsh and I have so many warm memories of him singing in his Baritone voice. Thinking of the music even now brings tears to my eyes. He, like Joyce was born to love the music around him. My heart and love goes out to her family and friends...a lovely woman. Wishing you all peace, comfort and healing.

Ma Scott, always an inspiration and someone I adored. You welcomed me into your home like one of your own. My fond memories are lunches out and eating Campbells tomato soup with orange cheddar cheese at the farm.
