JOYCE SOWBY Obituary

SOWBY, JOYCE KATHARINE 1927 - 2022 Joyce passed away on January 5, 2022 at Sunnybrook Hospital, age 94. She was the beloved daughter of the late Laurence and Lulu Rous and former wife of the late David Sowby. Joyce was active at St. James Cathedral, Trinity College Alumnae and Havergal College Old Girls. A librarian at Scarborough College and the Annapolis Valley Regional Library, Joyce's interests were broad from Canadian history, the subject of her Queen's University MA, to Canadian art, particularly the Group of Seven about whom she published articles on the artists' time at her father's firm, Rous and Mann. Always curious, Joyce enjoyed art, travelled extensively, studied French, read voraciously, and attended lectures on history, art and religion into her 90s. She took enormous interest in everyone she knew: family and cousins; longstanding school, camp (Oconto) and university friends; her church community; the Parwana family from Afghanistan, sponsored by St. James for resettlement in Canada, whom she treated as family; and devoted neighbours and caregivers who helped her live at home until her final days. Particular thanks are due to Jane Pineda and Ann Aziz Dear for the kindness and care given to Joyce. Ever the librarian, for decades Joyce produced just the right book at Christmas for many relatives and friends. She devoted herself to the Trinity College Book Sale, sorting history books through the year and manning the tables during the sale. Her Christmas parties were legendary. Most important to Joyce was her faith and community at St. James where she was active and worshipped for most of her life. In 2018 she was awarded the Order of the Diocese of Toronto in recognition of her outstanding work at the Cathedral. Joyce will be missed by many and remembered for her generosity, kindness, faith and optimistic outlook on life. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at The Cathedral Church of St. James.

Joyce and I were close friends when she returned to university to complete an MA in history at Queen´s University. She was also one of my bridesmaids. Joyce was such fun company, full of energy, laughter, and entertaining stories about her travels and other life experiences. She was filled with insatiable curiosity, unflagging optimism, and a spirit of adventure. She was also motivated by a singular sense of service, dedication, generosity, and loyalty. She was blessed with the gifts to see the best in everybody and to enjoy life to its fullest. I was indeed fortunate to know her and have her in my life. Rest In Peace dear friend.

I missed seeing Joyce at St James Cathedral for Canada Day July 1 2022 BBQ. Google searched and found Joyce's obituary. I worked at Scarborough College library when Joyce was librarian there from 1975 to 1980. I will miss her laughter, generousity of spirit and warm friendship. I once saw her at Younge and Eglinton in a snow storm two years ago and she remembered me!!! Joyce was everything that's good about being Canadian. May her beautiful soul rest in peace. Very saddened by this news.

Havergal connections and lifelong friends, Joyce was a friend of my mother Mary Mordy. Joyce welcomed me several times for potluck meals or for tea, giving me the pleasure of getting to know her as well. She was a wonderful lady who made this world a better place.

Joyce and I were friends for many years as Tour Guides of St. James. She welcomed everyone with lively informed observations, and inspired creation of a guide to the stained glass. Engaging casual passers-by through her delightful wit, Joyce made their visits to the Cathedral convivial and memorable.

Remembering Rous & Mann. Our father, Frederick Malcolm Mann (1908-1997) was Chairman of Rouse & Mann until he retired. We send our deepest sympathy to the family, to which ours was once closely connected.
