June Stewart Obituary

JUNE KATHLEEN STEWART

June passed away peacefully on October 26, 2016 in her 92nd year. Predeceased by her loving husband Jim and eldest son Steve. Survived by sons (and daughter-in-law) Peter (Janet) and David, and much loved grandchildren Michael, Richard and Diane. June graduated from the U of T in 1945 and immediately hit the ground running. She loved life, she loved the arts and she loved people. Her outgoing and flamboyant personality – and her ability to adapt to virtually any situation – left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her co-workers at the CBC and Canadian Red Cross, her students and fellow teachers at Etobicoke Collegiate and the hundreds of individuals who stayed at her B&B in Haliburton would all agree – she was never at a loss for words. June could talk intelligently and passionately to anyone about anything. In her final years, she never complained about any aliments and gained the respect of her caregivers and fellow residents at Burloak LTC in Burlington. The outpouring of sincere condolences and admiration of her indomitable spirit from her new friends and the outstanding staff at Burloak was a testament to the way she lived her life and the way she wanted to be remembered. We will miss you Mom. There will be a celebration of June's life at The Oakville Centre For The Performing Arts on Sunday, November 20 from 1 to 5 p.m. Wear something purple!

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Burloak Residents' Council Fund (Art Therapy) – contact Heather Potwarka at

905-639-6389 ext 225. June would appreciate it.

I am sorry for the loss of your dear mother. She was very kind to me when I first arrived in Haliburton in 2006 to be the Curator at Rails End Gallery. I stayed with June for a few months shortly after Jim passed away and got a crash course in the history of the Haliburton Highlands Guild of Fine Arts a.k.a. "The Guild". We enjoyed many evening meals and chats about the art scene.
She was a true friend of the Arts in so very many ways.
