Kasimir Katchin Obituary

KATCHIN, Kasimir A. ("Kass") - 1914-2009, WW II Veteran and Air Canada "Pionair", passed away peacefully in his sleep at Leisureworld Vaughan on Friday, March 13, 2009, in his 95th year. His strong heart that carried him so long finally grew tired. Predeceased by Ursula, his cherished wife and best friend of 64 years, and by three sisters and a brother. He was a loving father of Monica of Bracebridge, Gregory (Ann Marie) of Richmond Hill, Jerome of Port Rowan and Barbara (Robert Métivier) of Newmarket. He was a caring and encouraging grandfather and is sadly missed by grandchildren Ian (Diane Ferreira) and Christine Katchin (and fiancé Robert Grant) and Ryan and Adam Métivier. He is also survived by his brother Victor (Jean, of Austin, Texas), sisters Isabel and Phyllis and sister-in-law Betty (all of Winnipeg, Manitoba). After almost four decades in Winnipeg, in 1950 Kass moved his growing family to Montreal as an engineering technician with Trans Canada Airlines. There in Dorval he coached Little League baseball and loved building and flying his R/C model airplanes. When he was transferred by Air Canada to Mississauga, he happily spent the next three decades there. Retiring after more than 30 years with TCA and Air Canada, he grew bored and soon started a new career for several years as a technical writer with a nearby engineering firm. He lived a long and good life, never complained about much, and placed a great emphasis on education for his children and grandchildren. Special thanks to the many caring staff at Leisureworld Vaughan. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, March 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 10295 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill. Cremation. A graveside service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Thornhill, following the Mass.

I was very sorry to learn of Kass' passing. I worked with Kass at DAF Indal in his second career. He was an amazing individual, always so youthful in attitude and outlook. I always looked forward to his visits at Chrismas when Indal would hold its annual Christmas Lunch and invite all retirees. Kass would drop by and chat and we would catch up on each others news. Since I retired I have not been at those lunches and I understand that Kass was not able to attend the last couple either. My prayers are with you in the loss of a wonderful man.
