KENNETH HANCOCK Obituary

HANCOCK, KENNETH JOSEPH Kenneth Joseph Hancock, 72, of Dunnville, was born in Willowdale to Harry and Carrie. He will be missed by daughters, Rachael and Rebecca, by sisters, Carrie, Amy, Liza and Martha, by longtime friend, Deborah Ellis, and by countless others he worked with and influenced over the years. A gifted hockey player in his youth, Ken was drafted at a young age by the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks at a time when the NHL had only the 6 original teams. He turned his back on hockey because he hated the violence in it. He got his Masters of Theology at University of Toronto's Emmanuel College, became involved in helping Chilean refugees escaping the Pinochet regime and Americans not wanting to go to Vietnam, as well as organizing against nuclear power. A straight man, he provided solidarity and security at gay pride events when those events were just starting out. Led by a tradition of radical non-violence, Ken organized with the Cruise Missile Conversion Project and the Alliance for Non-Violent Action. When the G7 came to Toronto, Ken put together a War Crimes Tribunal to try them all for war crimes, followed by a non-violent citizen's arrest of Reagan, Mulroney and the other G7 leaders. He and his close friend, Marc Brzustowski, put together the Walk Against Male Violence, which saw thousands of students raising money for women's shelters and for girls' schools in Afghanistan. Ken was a frequent guest in many jails for acts of civil disobedience to bring a little justice to the planet. Old hockey and other injuries put him in a wheelchair at an assisted living facility for the last years of his life. From there, he organized Dunnville's first-ever gay pride event. Ken was shy and no good at small talk, but if anyone showed a flicker of interest, he could talk for ages about politics and liberation. He was a passionate public speaker with an encyclopedia in his brain that could make connections between facts and illuminate how the world works. He loved movies and jazz and good books. Ken struggled with alcoholism for decades. It was not always easy to be around him, and it was certainly not easy to be him. For all that, he still kept trying to make the world better. Ken is free now, up in heaven, hanging with Jimmy Cagney and raising hell among the angels. Good bye, Ken. See you in the next life.

Our deepest sympathy and comforting hugs are extended to Deborah Ellis and Ken's family and friends upon hearing the sad news of his untimely loss.
Ken made a powerful impact on the lives of so many during his amazing life!
He and Mark Brzustowski organized The Walk Against
Male Violence with our students at Archbishop Romero Catholic High School in Toronto.
Ken had a unique ability to hold the attention of a cafetorium full of teenagers as he shared fascinating stories about the importance of social justice, all the while changing their perspective on the world and raising their awareness of the importance of standing up for their beliefs. He showed them by example that the actions of one person could make a positive difference in the world!
"Like The Walrus and The Carpenter, Ken could talk of many things..."
However, he didn't just talk an incredibly powerful talk, he truly
"WALKED THE WALK."
He would always say,
"Viva Emma Goldman and Dan Berrigan."
Hopefully, he is with them now discussing politics and anecdotes from his favourite movies like Casablanca.
"Here's looking at you kid! We will not forget you,
dear friend, for you gave us so much to remember!
Let us all continue to keep Ken's memory alive by striving for justice and making the world a better place.
May your spirit live on forever!

"VIVA KEN HANCOCK!

It makes no sense that he's gone. I was scheduled to go see him just hours before he died, and it seemed like he was getting better, even though he did not feel well enough for a visit by the time I got to the hospital. I have to believe that the next life is an easier life for him than this life was, although when he was well, he sure had a good time raising non-violent hell to those in power. I just can't believe he's gone.

I knew Ken in high school and then university. Years later we connected again when I was at Henry Carr High School, and he organized the Walk Against Male Violence. The obituary is a good description of Ken. He could talk for a long time on social justice issues. Ken was a kind and compassionate man. He was intense, but he could see the humour in things.

One of the most influential people in my life. I spent many hours with Ken meeting him as a teacher at Notre Dame in Welland. We did 25 years at Notre Dame for the Walk Against Male violence. The students always loved him and he inspired so many students throughout his time organizing the provincial walk. I am saddened by his loss. We had a few battles over the years but always remained friends. Love ya ken

The passing of Ken is a sad time and his obituary does not touch the big life he had nor the number of people his energy and dedication touched. Dedication to human rights and the energy to be the face of walkathons at their inception, dedication to education and the energy to share the gospels of kindness and love of fellow man seem to have evaporated. Knowing Ken in the early ‘80s and meeting him again in 2000’s is a vast and rather sad differential. I salute this man and what he accomplished. Rest In Peace Walking Man

I am sad to hear that Ken has passed away. I enjoyed many chats with Ken over the years. He enjoyed browsing at the garage sales my sister Shirley and I had to raise money for the Dunnville Hospital Foundation. Ken sponsored me when I was raising money for my church to send kids to Camp. He was such a good, caring person and so very interesting to talk to. I was looking forward to many more chats with him this summer. Sending my sincere condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.
