Kenneth Rutherford Obituary

KENNETH (KEN) RUTHERFORD 10 August 1928 - 09 March 2009 Ken Rutherford passed away after a brief illness at his home in Prescott, Ontario. After graduating from the Radio College of Canada, Ken followed his brother Jack into the business, Toronto Camera Exchange, started by their father George. Although he had wanted a very different career, he committed his enormous energies to the company and, from its modest beginnings on Church Street, Ken and his brother built Toronto Camera Centre on Yonge Street into Canada's premier photographic retailer. The two brothers also developed a national professional photographic and audiovisual operation under the name Rutherford Photographic Ltd. Funny, loyal and generous to a fault, Ken was entirely indifferent to the pursuit of social status that obsessed so many others. Contemptuous of pretence of any kind, he considered no job to be beneath him, and believed there was dignity in any work undertaken with pride and competence. Accordingly, he treated everyone with whom he came in contact, from salesclerks to road cleaners, with courtesy and respect. In return, Ken enjoyed the respect and admiration of countless honest, hardworking individuals. Loved by all who knew him, Ken was a stand-up guy. An enthusiastic and very able carpenter and yachtsman, Ken was never happier than when working with his hands, and over the years built boats, repaired and refinished furniture, and extensively renovated and expanded several of his homes. An irrepressible bargain hunter and collector of tools (often purchased in sets of two, because, "You never know..."), after retirement, Ken moved to the village of Tweed, Ontario and opened a flea market where he sold the furniture he had refinished and what he called his 'junque' (which of course only made room for more). His basements and outbuildings were always a treasure trove of nostalgia and the unexpected. (It was often joked that, before venturing into any of these, visitors ought to be provided with a flashlight, a compass, a sandwich and a whistle.) Ken is deeply mourned by his wife Joan of four years, and by his children David and Suzanne, his daughter-in-law Pascale, his granddaughter Rhiannon, his nephews Bill Armstrong, Bob Rutherford and Ken Rutherford, and his sister-in-law Ruth. Ken was predeceased by his sister Marjorie, his brother Jack and his nephew Craig. Memorial services for Ken are to be held in Grasse (SE France) and in Regina (Sask.). Because Ken loved animals, and cats in particular, the family requests that those wishing to honour Ken make donations in his name to the SPCA or to their local Humane Society.

I fondly remember Ken both from my days as a customer at Toronto Camera and then as an employee of Rutherford's. I experienced his warm hospitality and love of life while I was a guest at his home in Tweed. He rescued us from a nasty 48 hour winter white-out storm. He ensured we had a wonderfully memorable time with much laughter injected into an otherwise very scary experience. And yes he did introduce us to all the cats and kittens on the farm at the time and gave us a personal tour of his "hobby" flea market.
My regards to his family and friends.

David,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Thanks for letting me know, as I had a busy week and wasn't very media cognizant. I've copied your email to a few of my old photography associates. I'm sure they'll stop what they are doing and reflect like I did.

When anyone who was part of one's ambitious young adult phase leaves us, we all feel a twinge. The photo store was a beacon, attracting photographers like me, from a small town with big city ambitions. We felt like we on the inside, looking out, when we made the trip to Toronto, usually with a few friends, and looked at the equipment for sale.

My regards to Pascale and Rhiannon

I am saddened to hear of Ken's passing. I had the privilege to be a guest at his farmhouse in Tweed on several occasions and can attest to his down to earth nature.

I will always remember the trade I made with him back in the early eighties of some 78 Gilbert and Sullivan records for a 1956 Frigidaire stove. Saved from the Tweed dump, we used and loved that stove up until just a couple of years ago and I often thought of Ken, who kindly offered to deliver the stove to our place in Toronto.

From the boardroom to back of beyond, Ken was a class act.

I was very sad to hear about the death of Ken Rutherford. He and I were co-captains of Rutherford Photo when it was going through a traumatic period and his kindness and patience helped make the project a success. Ken used to stay with me every Wednesday night before he went home to Tweed and I remember waiting up for him every Wednesday night because he was out shopping for treasures. It was not unusual for Ken to pull up in the driveway with his truck loaded with goodies and three mattresses strapped on the top of the truck. As his obituary states he was a very kind and unpretentious person and I will always think of him fondly. My condolences go out to the Rutherford family at this sad time.
