Kirk BUSHNELL Obituary

BUSHNELL, Kirk Ellsworth - The family mourns the sudden passing of Kirk Bushnell at the age of 61 on July 20, 2013 in Toronto, Ontario. Kirk was an intrepid individual who loved world travel and making friends in the many countries and cultures he visited. His travel letters, as remembered by his cousin David, would take on almost epic proportions as he passed along descriptions of places no one else in our family had seen, or would ever see. His passion for sailing which he shared with his father Howard, gave years of joy and adventure to them both. Illnesses later in his life were a great challenge to Kirk and those around him. But as so thoughtfully expressed by his cousin Janet, we can remember that once there was a bright, beautiful and brilliant beginning with all that his life could promise. We can remember Kirk's cheerful outgoing nature and his enjoyment of other people. Kirk will be sorely missed by his brother Richard and cousins Janet Humphrey, David Bushnell, George Ryan, Jeffrey Ryan, Tom Howard, step families Polly and Wayne Rod and Barbara and Ralph Stone and friend Denis Gay. Kirk was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Lois Bushnell. A graveside service for family and friends at St. John's Norway Cemetery is planned for Wednesday, September 4 at 11:00 a.m.

I can't believe a year has passed so quickly. I was just looking at photos of Kirk and remembering him fondly. Funny and sad how in life , we often drift apart from the ones we loved. I cherish our memories together, all of the Berkley Street Brat Pack! We were so cool! Don't forget Crystal!

Hope heaven is treating you good my friend. xxx

So sad! Kirk was a special person to whom I had a lot of love for. He called me occasionally after David and I moved back to Scotland. Once he called me on Mother's Day, a few years after Lois died, and told me I was his 2nd Mum. I won't forget that. So, rest in peace Kirk.

Death Is Nothing At All

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still
Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way you always used
Put no difference into your tone
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
At the little jokes we always enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
Without the ghost of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolute unbroken continuity
What is death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you for an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner
All is well.
Nothing is past; nothing is lost
One brief moment and all will be as it was before
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Dear Rick,
Words can not express how I feel. Kirk and I shared so many experiences together. He taught me so much and I would not be the person I am today if it had not been for him. I had not seen Kirk for many years but talked to him on the phone after your Dad passed away. I was hoping to see him again on my next visit to Toronto which coincidentally is next month. My thoughts and prayers go out o you and the family. Kirk will always hold a special place in my heart. D.

I'm one of Kirk's Minnesota cousins. My mom was Howard's sister. It was always a big event when Lois and Howard and the boys visited Minnesota from Canada. It meant the whole “Bushnell family” would be together. So fun to see them all, and Kirk was so energetic and fun-loving. Later, I do remember Grandmother Bushnell reading his letters from all over the world, and I always marveled at Kirk's abilities to meet people, explore cities and countries that I thought could be dangerous, to get around from place to place in strange lands – I was amazed. And he was gone for such long periods of time. When we visited Howard and family in Toronto, Kirk was so proud of his fun, narrow house and the many improvements, his garden in the back and the great location. He had friends and seemed happy and glad we were there.
Several years ago, my wife, daughter and son-in-law visited Howard and Kirk and one of the highlights was a sail across Lake Ontario. Kirk was so helpful and cheerful in getting the ship ship-shape for our trip. He was excited for us to take this trip and his love for sailing was so strong. Was fun being with him. Waving to a smiling Kirk on shore as the ship left was probably the last time I saw Kirk.
I pray that in his last years and days he could remember and relive the good times ---- the joy of growing up on the big lake with Lois, Howard and Rick; success in school; amazing travel adventures; great times sailing; good friends and much more. As Rick states so well: Kirk is sailing with God.

The obituary reminded me that Kirk was not just an engineer and a world traveler; he also had a talent for writing. Most of Kirk's travels were in the pre-e-mail days. He wrote long handwritten letters from all over the world to our Grandmother Bushnell who loved reading them multiple times and sharing them aloud with the family.
Kirk also came by his engineering bent as had his father, Howard, by being an inveterate tinkerer. He was delighted to have us out to the winter sun room he designed and constructed for the back of his house. On in the winter; off in the summer.
His last few years must have been very difficult for him as by nature he had been an outgoing people person for all his life before that time. We can celebrate that for so many years, Kirk enjoyed friendships with a lot of people. He was always one of the liveliest and most vivacious persons present at family gatherings.
Rest in Peace, Kirk. We will miss you.
