Lachlan Macquarrie Obituary
MACQUARRIE, Lachlan Bruce Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) BA, BSW, MSW, CD - At home in Peterborough on January 11, 2009, surrounded by loved ones. He leaves his beloved wife Wai May (Chan) and was predeceased in 1981 by his wife Helen (Roach). Lachlan will be deeply missed by his four children and their families: son Kelvin and Maarje (Armstrong), Brendan, and Lauren; son David and Siobhán (Calvert), Aisling, and Caiomhe; daughter Karen and Louis Taylor, and Dylan; daughter Janet and Chummer Farina, Laura, and Heather. Born in Toronto on February 11, 1925, Lachlan attended Malvern Collegiate before enlisting in the RCAF in 1943. After receiving an MSW from the University of Toronto (1953), he began his career as an Area Social Welfare Officer in the RCAF, rising to the position of head of the newly formed Canadian Forces Social Work Service. Lachlan left the RCAF to become Director of the Hong Kong Council of Social Services (1970-1973). He subsequently served as founding principal of Hong Kong's Institute for Social Work Training (1973-1977) and as first department head of the Hong Kong Polytechnic's School of Social Work (1977-1985). He retired from the post of Associate Director, Applied Science, Hong Kong Polytechnic (1985-1987). After retirement, Lachlan joined the board of the Peterborough and Area Alzheimer's Society and also served as President of the Alzheimer Society of Ontario. Memorial service in Peterborough, Ontario at Murray Street Baptist Church on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Murray Street Baptist Church or the Alzheimer Society will be gratefully accepted.
