LEILA EVELYN PICKERING
(nee DUNDAS)
November 8, 1923 - January 21, 2015
Mom succumbed to Alzheimer's disease after a seven year long and winding road, in her 92nd year. She still maintained a wicked sense of humour to the end. Leila Evelyn (Lyn to her friends) was born in Winthrop County (Southern Ontario) on November 8, 1923. The baby of the Dundas family, she was raised on the farm and worked hard all her young life. In 1939, when she was 16, she moved to Toronto to join her older sisters Ida and Agnes to begin a life of adventure in the big city. They spent many a night dancing at the Palais Royale at Sunnyside Beach. For a time, she worked in a munitions factory during the Second World War. Lyn went on to study at the Salvation Army (Grace Hospital) and became a nurse in the obstetrics unit in 1945. In 1949, she met and married Robert John Pickering. Four children followed: Sandra Lyn (Sebastian Salm), Kimberly Joan (Emil Piatkowski), Robert John and David John, who were all raised and schooled in Oakville. Lyn was predeceased by her dear brothers Willy (Ruby Evelyn) Dundas and Frank (Evelyn) Dundas and sisters Ida (David Andrews) and Agnes (Neal Reid). Lyn has six grandchildren Adam (Lorraine) Pickering, Daniel Piatkowski, Sarah Piatkowski, Christopher Pickering, Sydney Pickering and Leila Salm. Lyn devoted her life to raising her family and she instilled in all of her children a good, healthy work ethic. She was a fantastic cook, an even better baker - and her cookies, pies and cakes were legend in our family. She had a great sense of humour and loved to laugh. She was dearly loved and cherished. As per Lyn's wish cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will follow on February 7th from 2-5 p.m. at 1400 Grosvenor Street, Oakville. Everyone welcome.
