MAREE CHAMANDY Obituary

CHAMANDY, MAREE CHRISTINA (nee FINN) June 14, 1931 – May 21, 2021 We thought our mother would live forever because nothing could keep her down. So, it comes as quite a shock to announce that she died peacefully, just three weeks short of her 90th birthday. She began her day with her Globe & Mail on the sofa as she did every morning, put her head down to rest for a moment and gently joined our father, Dick (deceased 1973) and her beloved mother-in-law, Adele (deceased 1985). Always proud of her Irish heritage, Mum was born in Belfast and raised in Dublin, the second of Matt Finn and Sarah McLarnon's five children. She immigrated to Canada in 1954 and worked with the Guaranty Trust for several years where she met our father. Notwithstanding Dad's early passing, she had a full and active life and was in admirable health until the end. She continued to play tennis until a few years ago. In the last few years with her pace moderating, life was about coffee time with great friends, Friday gatherings with neighbours, bridge, daily walks, and her family. Maree was the consummate social being. Mum will be missed by her boys, Ian, David and Patrick. Also by her daughters-in-law and her grandchildren Aidan, Olivia and Eric, Leah and Ryan. Mothers hold their children's hands for just a little while... and their hearts forever. The last word goes to Mum: It's me, Maree. I would like to say I inherited three wonderful daughters-in-law - Lori, Marie-Hélène and Cindy. Also some dear friends, many I have known for over fifty years, who have been so supportive - Maggie, Roberta, Geeska, Eva, MaryAnn, Judith, Sandra, Lynda, and Jane Moore. Also deceased - Edith, Liz and Ann. I also enjoyed playing tennis and bridge at The Cricket club for many happy years. Much Love, Maree. A celebration will be scheduled at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to www. waramps.ca

My wife was just reading the Cricket Club newsletter and told me of the news of Maree's passing. It came as a shock. I have had the great honour of knowing Maree for the past several years and the great pleasure of playing tennis with her many times. Maree was always a delight to be with and ready for a friendly jousting of opinions. I looked forward to encountering her at the Club since it meant a few minutes (at least!) of good craic. And now, after all these months of pandemic without seeing her, she's gone and I'm greatly saddened by the loss of a good friend.

I was so saddened to hear that Maree had passed . I heard from my neighbour in the building. My daughter and I got to know Maree quite well in the many times that we saw each other either in the building or out on the street. Many times we tried to help her with her vcr so she could watch her favourite movies! We will greatly miss seeing here and having our chats . All the best to the family, your Maree was a wonderful , kind lady with lots of stories to tell . Sincerely Wendy , Megan and Fin Christoforidis

Greetings Mum friends, acquaintances and family. On behalf of my brothers Patrick & Ian, I thank-you for your warm wishes and for being a friend to our Mum. If we didn't know you personally, we no doubt heard of you as her fondness for storytelling about her day and what went on in her day remained one of her defining characteristics to the end (Ian, Patrick and I have the cauliflower ears to prove it)! Effectively, she liked to talk and she had opinions and there were many...I think you all knew her well and get the drift.
In the end you all mattered to her and that's really all that matters. So thank-you again for your goodness and warmth toward her and toward us. It means a lot.
Perhaps in the coming months we will get a chance to see you when life goes back to normal and we can hold a proper reception.
We hope you are all happy and healthy and looking forward to a nice warm summer. Cheers to you all.

Ian, David and Patrick,
I send my condolences with great fondness for our days gone by as neighbours on Chaplin Crescent...and for Maree (and Dick)!
I was so so fond your mom.
She had that special gift for spreading her joy. I loved just being around her. She was always so interested, so upbeat...so playful. She always made me smile. She was a great lady. All the best. David Hadden

Maree's family: I worked with Maree in the head office branch of Guaranty Trust at 366 Bay Street in Toronto the 1980s. I remember her very well. Always looking her best with a great sense of humour. She was so funny - she would charm the Bay Street lawyers and retirees who came in to make investments, but also had a wicked tongue once they left if they had been rude or not treated her well. In the end she was always professional and caring. And always talking about 'her boys'!
Please accept my sincere condolences. May your memories fill your heart and put a smile on your face.

I remember many years ago when we met Maree and her boys on the Jolly Roger II in Barbados and spent an afternoon sailing and drinking aboard the ship. It was my first time to Barbados though my parents had been before. It was a delightful day with great weather, food and of course drinks. My mother Mary Jane would also often recall her trip with Maree to Mexico with a group of friends. Where they enjoyed playing tennis and bridge. It was one of her favorite getaway trips. I know it’s hard to lose your Mom but I believe Maree packed a lot of experiences into her life while she was living.

Maree was my sister in law. She had been like a mother to my husband, Hugh Finn who she also outlived! She was lively, funny - a real character! Since Hugh died 3 years ago, she took the trouble to keep in touch with me in London by phone every week! I shall miss our calls.

Dick was my classmate at Osgoode Hall and Maree was my teller of choice at G.Trust, 366 Bay. Her warmth, sparkling smile and personality have stayed with me down the decades. I’m so glad that she had a good life and left it peacefully.
