Auntie Maynie shares a secret with Katherine.

Nancy DesLauriers

July 26, 2012

I feel so very fortunate to have had so much good time with my beloved Auntie Maynie. When my young family lived in Milton, we were always included in the Hill family gatherings and Auntie Maynie's warm presence and the love that she lavished on everyone made us all feel a little less sad about being so far away from my own lovely Mom in Calgary. She bonded with my kids (as evidenced by this picture of her with my 4 year old Katherine in 1989 – the same trip where my 2 year old Valerie named her brand new and treasured stuffed dog “Maynie”), always was sincerely interested in our lives and stayed connected as family (and extended family and friends) meant everything to her - and it showed! Auntie Maynie's kindness and love of life never wavered and I am so blessed to have been able to have that lunch with her and Francie and Maura last week which I will forever treasure. We reminisced about her early years on the farm and got a glimpse of her life and those of her sisters as a “Peppy Girl” (my Mom sang at these monthly gatherings and Auntie Maynie danced)! So surprising to learn this as both women have always been so uncomfortable as adults to be the center of attention. She is such a fine example of how to truly live your best life to me. And while I am so saddened at the loss of her bright light here on earth, I am warmed by the thought that now Heaven has an even brighter and more brilliant light in Maynie that shines down on us all from Above right alongside Uncle Lawrence. On behalf of all of the DesLauriers clan, we extend our love and deepest sympathy to all of our beautiful Hill cousins. Love Nance.

There are limited numbers of special people in our lives and Auntie Marion was certainly one of those to me. Such a kind heart, always open and caring. She was very encouraging and that brought out the best in everyone - thinking about others before herself. Curious about what you were interested in, how you were feeling. And most importantly, wondering if you were hungry (which, of course, I always was during my summer trips to 15 Houston Crescent as a teen). Food and Marion seem to go hand-in-hand in my memory. The divine bread and rolls - an A-class Eastern Canadian substitute for Annie's! The ultimate nurturer - giving so much, and helping so many people grow in so many ways.

Mrs. Hill was truly an inspiration for all who had the good fortune to know her. She always greeted you with a warm, ready smile and had the uncanny ability to remember not just the names of everyone in my family, but also every detail of our last conversation. Her dinner rolls were legendary, as were her huge family dinners that often included old friends such as the Higgins family.
She raised a large, wonderful family that carry on the Hill's tradition of hospitality and great kindness. She was one-of-a kind and she will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Hills at this sad time.
God Bless.
