Mark Dailey Obituary

MARK EDWARD DAILEY After a courageous and tremendous battle with cancer, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Edward Dailey. He peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 6, 2010 surrounded by his family. Mark was the devoted husband of Kim (Gould) and proud father of Nicole (Murray) Grove and son-in-law Matthew Grove. He was born August 1, 1953 in Youngstown, Ohio the cherished son of John and Rose-Marie (Genetta) Dailey. Sisters, Kathleen (Dan) Gacsal of Toledo, Ohio; Colleen (Tom) of Hubbard, Ohio; son-in-law of John and Doreen Gould; sister-in-law, Kelly Clark, many nieces and nephews to whom he dearly loved. Mark graduated from Ursuline High School and attended the law enforcement program at Youngstown State University. At 16 years old he began pursuing his passion in radio and television broadcasting at WNIO and WYTV respectively. Mark had a parallel career in law enforcement, then moved to Windsor, Ontario and worked at CKLW as anchor and crime reporter. Mark was a radio reporter/anchor at CHUM Radio, founding news director at Q-107 radio and served as assignment editor, producer, crime reporter and eventually late night news anchor at CITY TV in Toronto. He's known as 'The Voice' of Toronto. He was one of the founding members of the Toronto Crime Stoppers program. He has lectured extensively on police and justice issues and media relations at the Canadian Police College, Ontario Police College, Ontario and Canadian Chiefs of Police, Ontario Fire Chiefs and with former US Secret Service media officer Jack Warner to numerous other law enforcement officials North America wide. Mark has won numerous awards for his work including Man of the Year 2009, the City of Toronto volunteer service award and a Public Vote of Thanks from the governor General of Canada for community service. He is also very respected for his involvement with numerous charities. Most recently Mark and his colleagues at City TV were just received a Gemini Award for Breaking News Coverage. Mark has chronicled his own personal battle with prostate cancer on television and encouraged many to be pro-active on men's health issues. He is on the board of directors of Prostate Cancer Canada. He thoroughly enjoyed golf, driving semi-trucks, CASCAR racing, baseball, music and travelling. To all who have had the honour to meet him, Mark's a true gentleman and a genuinely kind and compassionate man. Many know him as the most faithful friend, willing to give his time, talent and an encouraging word. His quick wit and humour was loved by all. He has always put others before himself and loved the GTA. Calling hours will be at the Murray E. Newbigging Funeral Home, 733 Mt. Pleasant Rd. (south of Eglinton), Toronto, Ontario on Wednesday, December 8th and Thursday, December 9th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, 1585 Yonge St. (at Heath St.), on Saturday, December 11th at 1:00 p.m. Dr. Peter Holmes and the Rev. David O. Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to Prostate Cancer Canada, 145 Front Street East, Suite 306 Toronto, Ontario M5A 1E3 Canada, would be appreciated by the family.

I always considered Mark Dailey a large part of the Toronto landscape. Like the twin towers, he will be missed. My condolences to his family & friends.

There are no words to describe the sorrow felt by Mark's family and friends here in the states. It was impossible for his parents to be at the service because of illness. A memorial service has been planned in Mark's honor. It will be held at 12: 00 noon on Jan. 15 at St. Rose Church, Girard, OH. May he rest in peace as his memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. ~~

I lived my first 35 years in Toronto and Mark's voice was a constant. I have lived my last 20 years in Nova Scotia but was able to get CP24 and watched it often. I only just today learned of Mark's passing and I am truly saddened. Having lost two family members at this time of year I can offer my sincere condolences to his family in this Christmas and those to come. Rest with the Lord, Mark. Well done thou good and faithful servant.

I had the privilege of working with Mark at CHUM radio in Toronto in the mid-1970's where we were both employed as Newscasters. Mark had a rare wit and always had a smile on his face. I too have had prostate cancer. I was diagnosed in 2006, but it is 100% gone after treatment. He was a friend and a dear colleague and I am deeply saddened at his untimely passing. My condolences to his family.

December 12, 2010

Growing up with City Pulse news Mark was always present on our home TV. Seeing all the older photos and news reports of him as crime reporter has brought back a lot of memories! After moving away to the States and then reurning about the same time as Mark began his late night anchor role on City...we watched faithfully to enjoy great reporting and his genuine personality - not to mention his love for Toronto. Our favourite part of each broadcast was the very real enjoyment Mark and Katherine had bantering back and forth during the sports segments!!
Having just moved to Vancouver we are missing out on the opportunity to be at the memorial at Yorkminster Park Baptist. Please accept our deepest condolances...and know that you truly have been in our prayers and will continue to be in the coming days. May the Lord's deepest peace and comfort be with your family.

Sincerely,
Karen & Graeme Illman (Coquitlam, BC)

Mark Dailey was a constant in my home. Always watching and listening to him. I was and still am so saddened by his loss. He showed such courage in his battle with the cancer. He truly leaves a memorable impression. Even my 21 year old daughter is sad and she claims that Mark Dailey inspired her to study journalism. Rest in Peace Mr. Dailey.

To Kim and Nicole:
I have grown up with Mark on City News. I have never met him, but for all the 30 years he was on the news I feel I got to know him. I am 45 now, with a grown daughter of my own (aged 20), and even she feels the loss. On Saturday, the family that came to watch him for those 30 years will watch via the internet to say "goodbye and Godspeed...till we meet again."
Our thoughts and our prayers will be with you. Thanks again for sharing Mark with us - as I like to say about people I admire - "he was one awesome dude."

I never met Mark but hearing of his death brought tears to my eyes. I've watched him for years and watching all the news reports made me cry - I had lost a friend. I hope he knew how much he impacted all our lives - even when we assumed he would just always be there.

I arrived in Toronto in the late seventies also and couldn't help but chuckle at the sarcastically witty voice overs to CITY's late movies. I began to look forward to these voice overs as I knew that this guy announcing had something special going on. What a talent. What wit. What a loss.

Once the voice was silenced, the bright light went out as well. Your time here on earth was enjoyed by millions over the years. When I heard your voice on Monday evening, I thought how great, you are either back or back for a visit, only to hear you lost your battle. Our Lord gave you 57 memorable years with you and now he has chosen you to spend eternity with him. Our deepest sympathy to your wife Kim, and daughter Nicole, and hope in time they will find some comfort in knowing you are no longer fighting the battle. Because of you, many men are still alive and living well because of your words to get checked. Mark, you did reach people "everywhere". Rest in peace, you will be missed, but never forgotten.

I was privileged to meet Mark on the first of many golf trips to Myrtle Beach that he organised in April/May of each year. What a gentleman is the truest sense of the word, we shared many many laughs over the years. People talk about his distinctive voice but I prefer to remember him as the heart and soul of the party where he enjoyed such respect and genuine affection from all around him. Let's all honour his memory by conributing handsomely to Prostate Cancer Canada, his favoured cause. Spare some prayers and thoughts for his loved ones Kim and Nicole. Rest in Peace friend and God Bless you. "In the morning and at the going down of the sun we shall remember you"

We are very saddened by the passing of Mark. We will miss him at the other end of the TV each night. I had not had the pleasure of meeting Mark, but I felt as if I knew him, like many Torontonian's we knew his 'voice.' His bravery and positive outlook during his illness is to be admired. What a beautiful testament to the life of a man whose passing has caused an entire city to stop, mourn, ponder his sense of humour, his charitable acts, his good nature, his talent and professionalism, and his humane, affable personality.

I hope it is of some comfort to Mark's family - both at home and at City TV - that the entire city of Toronto (and beyond) mourn your personal loss. He had a way of making us all feel connected to one another, and many of us feel as though we've lost one of our own family members. He was truly a great man who deeply impacted those he met and lived his life well.

My sincere condolences to you all.

December 9, 2010

You were a great man and asset to CITY TV & Toronto. We remember meeting you in 1980 when you walked up our driveway in a Mississauga townhouse complex to investigate the murder of a small child.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mark's family. Mark will live on in those who knew him, loved him, worked with him. He will always be remembered as funny, kind and giving. He was the last person I spoke to at CHUM the day my department was let go. I'll never forget the look on his face when I told him. In those few minutes, I got to know Mark just a little bit better. The world needs more people like Mark. He was definitely a shining star in the CHUMCity family. Thanks Mark. Peace.

I read of Mark's passing Tuesday evening while waiting for the train at Spadina subway station and gasped. I had followed his cancer journey and hoped he would recover. My first thought was to call my mother as soon as a I got home, but then I remembered I couldn't as she passed on Sept 11, 2010. She was 89 and lived a good, long life, but Mark was far too young. So sorry for your loss. Our family mourns with you.

December 9, 2010

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I first met Mark at a news conference in 1981 when I had just started with CTV. I knew who he was and was quite overwelmed and ended up standing next to him and he was so nice and helpful and we became good friends and would be on stakeouts together and he was always so funny and asked some of the best questions. We both shared this dark sense of humour. I then went on to work at CITY and he was just a gas, a beautiful guy. Toronto just lost a piece of its identity and journalism just lost one of its brightest stars. You're in a better place now Markee, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Mark was a professional in the true sense of the word. I had the pleasure of meeting Mark a few years ago, & he treated me as though I had been a friend for years. I sincerely hope that CITY-TV continues with Mark's voice so we'll hear "City Pulse EVERYWHERE" That would be a great tribute.
Mark was courageous in his battle with cancer. He announced that he had been diagnosed with a cancerous growth on his kidney & he did this while on the air. To share that information with the world was something not many people would do, but I'm sure he did so in the hope of inspiring others afflicted with that terrible disease to keep fighting.
Mark was taken from us far too soon, but he's now enjoying something he so richly deserves...peace.
Thanks Mark for all you've done over the years.

He was one of the most sensible people on City TV. I really enjoyed his comments nothing over the top, you listened to what he had to say. You could see he was a nice man, and he will be missed. John Lawrence
