Martha Bielish Obituary

THE HONOURABLE DR. MARTHA P. BIELISH October 20, 1915 - May 18, 2010 With deepest sorrow, we announce the death of Martha P. Bielish of Warspite, Alberta. Martha lived a life of extensive public service at the community, provincial, national and international level. In September 1979, she was summoned to the Senate to represent the district of Lakeland. Her appointment was historically significant in that she was the first woman from Alberta, as well as the first woman of Ukrainian heritage to sit in the Senate. Fifty years after the Alberta Famous Five struggled for the right of a woman to be appointed, the province at long last had its first female Senator. Martha touched many lives through her public service. She helped many more privately - encouraging, assisting and mentoring. In honour of her life, her family and the University of Calgary are establishing a scholarship in her name. Should you wish to honour her memory, you can continue to enhance learning through contributing to the scholarship as outlined below. Memorial tributes may be made to the Hon Martha P. Bielish Memorial Scholarship at the University of Calgary by telephone at 403-220-3716 or by cheque made out to the University of Calgary (c/o University of Calgary Development Office), 2500 University Drive NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1N4 or online at netcommunity.ucalgary.ca/ HonMarthaPBielish Yewchin's Funeral Chapel Ltd., St. Paul, AB 1-780-645-5177.

Mervin, Pat and Family,
Mrs. Kathleen (Kay) Palamarek and Family extends our deepest sympathies to all of you in your loss. We all have very fond memories of Auntie Martha especially for myself as I spent my first Christmas with the three of you and my Mom while Dad was in the army. As Kids growing up we were always very impressed with Auntie Martha's involvement with traveling world wide with the WI and her involvement in the Senate.
Our love to you all.

Mervin, Pat & family,
A kind and wonderful person has left us with such wonderful and precious memories. She impacted my life in so many ways-- she was the one that told me that I could achieve whatever I wanted to achieve, be who I wanted to be, and never allow someone's opinion to sway my beliefs in myself. These are words that I have tried hard to follow. I have so many memories of her that it's hard to pick a favorite one. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Martha was such an important part of our life in Warspite and even after Mom & Dad moved to Edmonton. I think she was the first person who gave me a 'job' - helping harvest vegetables from the garden! So many memories...

Mrs. Bielish was a tremendous role model and warm and caring person. She was the reason I became a teacher . I worked so hard to follow her example. Not a Social Studies class was taught without the mention of her name. In a private conversation I had with her I shared how she had impacted my life. She responded with great humility and grace. I told her I wished to motivate students the way she had. Her response was that all I needed to do was touch one student because they would go forward and touch one more. The ripple effect would be great and would be powerful. Such words of wisdom! I was so proud to know this great lady and honoured to have had my life influenced by her. To Mervin, Patricia and all the family I offer my heartfelt sympathy. Her legacy will carry on through all of you! God Bless you all!.

Dear; Mrs. Bielish's Family,

Life and time passes, but memories last forever.

I remember Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bielish being farming neighbours to my parents, in the community of Warspite area. Earlier in the years. Before, Mrs. Bielish became the first female senator of Alberta, in 1979. She was a substitute teacher in Smoky Lake school district. Mrs. Bielish loved to talk about "farming" or "who" each of students were. She'll always be remembered for her smile and soft spoken voice. Mrs. Bielish was truly a treasure and will be missed by all who knew her.

As a current and relatively new member of the Alberta Women's Institutes I would like to express my condolences to Martha's family.
Martha's contribution to the advancement of women in Alberta and Canada is well known. Women, such as myself, today enjoy the benefits of her many courageous accomplishments.
