Mary Elizabeth Baker

BAKER, Mary Elizabeth (nee Norris) - Peacefully, in her 104th year on the morning of February 15, 2010 after a short stay in St. Joseph's Health Care Centre. Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Mary moved with her parents to Toronto a year following her birth. She was educated at Parkdale and Malvern collegiates and attended the University of Toronto. In 1933, she married George Robert Griffin Baker. They had two children Mary Linda and Gregory Langton. George died in 1958 and Mary remained a widow until her death. After retirement from Imperial Oil and then York University, she took painting classes and became an accomplished watercolourist. In her later days, she lived at the Richview Residence, making many friends there. During her last year, she was cared for by the dedicated staff of the Westbury Long Term Care Centre. Her strong religious faith sustained her throughout the vicissitudes of her long and sometimes challenging life. Mary is survived by her daughter Linda and son Gregory and their respective spouses Desmond and Margaret, as well as six grandchildren, their spouses and eleven great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 13th at the Olivet Church of the New Jerusalem, at 279 Burnhamthorpe Road, M9B 1Z6, between Kipling and Martingrove, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mary's Church at the above address, would be greatly appreciated.
