MARY HEARN Obituary

HEARN, MARY ANN ELIZABETH (nee DENAULT) August 13, 1939 - August 8, 2021 "One day you will ask me which is more important? My life or yours? I will say mine and you will walk away not knowing that you are my life." – Kahlil Gibran Mary passed away at 81, after a long battle with chronic illness. Proud and independent, she lived at home until she was hospitalized days before her death. Loving and adored Mom of Brian, Darlene and Bill (Sue), caring and dear Nana to Megan, Caroline (Mark), and Billy (Ida) and their baby Ville. Predeceased by her beloved husband Bill (2006), son Derreck (1971), and dog Mitzi (2020). Mary will be fondly remembered by family (including sisters Roberta, Joanie, Adele and Susie, and brother Doug) and many close friends. Mary earned her B.A. (York) and M.Ed. (Toronto) part-time over many years while working full-time and raising a family. After starting as a teacher, she retired in her 50's as a respected Principal with the Durham District School Board. A wise and compassionate matriarch, active listener, avid reader, dedicated diarist, painstaking family historian, and talented pianist, Mary cherished her family and friends. Ever resilient, she rose through difficulties throughout her life. While Mary enjoyed travelling abroad and spending time at the cottage in northern Ontario, she was happiest at home breaking bread or having tea with those she loved. Visitation at McEachnie Funeral Home in Pickering, on August 11th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral service on August 12th at 2 p.m., will be livestreamed. Only family and invited guests may attend in person. For details, please call 905-428-8488 or visit Mary's memorial page at www.arbormemorial.ca/mceachnie. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Pickering United Church.

Mary was my boss at SJAM in Pickering. She and her friend Marie were two of the first female administrators in Durham, blazing a trail for others. She was tough, but fair. I admired her chutzpah and support when I needed it as a young teacher.
She had a real knack for staffing, seeing the strengths in people and sometimes pushing people out of their comfort zone.
Thanks Mary. You will not be forgotten!

Bill, Brian and Darlene please accept my deepest condolences. I am so sorry that I did not stay in touch with your mother. So many things that I wanted to ask her. She is with your dad now at peace. RIP Cuddles...

I'll always remember Mary as the first principal my boys Kevin and Brendan had (at John A. MacDonald Public School) - where she always made sure that the well-organized Christmas concerts never went longer than an hour! - and more recently as a faithful and active member of Pickering Village United Church, where I served on the Search Committee that Mary led ably and efficiently. We ended up selecting Steven Davis as our new minister and he proved to be an excellent choice.

I'll always remember Mary, initially as the first principal my boys Kevin and Brendan had (John A. MacDonald Public School) - where she always ensured that Christmas concerts and other assemblies never lasted more than an hour! - and more recently as a faithful and active member of Pickering Village United Church. She chaired the Search Committee I served on when we selected Steven Davis as our minister and he proved to be an excellent choice.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend the visitation, but I'm hoping to see the livestream coverage of the funeral service.
