Mary Macleod Obituary

Mary MACLEOD

82, passed away peacefully at her residence in Toronto on September 27, 2016. Loving Mumsy to Colin (predeceased), Gary and his wife Sharon, doting Granny to Jasmine and Sarina and Aunt Mary to Neva, Jason and Dylan.

Born in Coatbridge, Scotland January 15, 1934, Mary immigrated to Canada with her husband William (divorced 1978) and settled in the Yonge and Eglinton area of Toronto where she raised her two sons, Gary born 1958 and Colin 1961 to 1999.

Trained as a home economist and baker, she founded Mary Macleod's Shortbread in 1981, the first shortbread only bakery in Canada. Mary moved her bakery to the Riverside area at 639 Queen Street East, its current location. Mary "officially" retired in 2010 but continued to bake and meet customers at her leisure. She passed the reigns to daughter-in-law Sharon. The bakery continues to thrive and expand, ensuring her legacy lives on.

Retirement allowed Mary time to devote to her many interests including cooking for family and staff, horticulture, travel, reading and spending time with her babbies (granddaughters). She supported many charities and community events and had a special affection for her Urban Angel, St. Michael's Hospital and all their wonderful staff.

In the course of her years, Mary touched many lives with her kindness and thoughtfulness and her true love of her fellow man. She will be dearly missed.

Visitation in the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre - 375 Mount Pleasant Rd., Toronto, ON. on Monday, October 3rd from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral in St. Paul's Basilica Parish - 83 Power St. on Tuesday, October 4th at 11 a.m. Burial to follow.

Our deepest condolences to Mary's family and staff. We wish we'd met Ms McLeod and thank in person her for delicious shortbread, which will continue to make many people happy for generations to come. There will always be a Mary.

The stars will shine a little brighter in heaven with Mary's passing. Her cookies were very much a part of our family, including dessert at our son's wedding. When Linda ( my "breast friend") and I were training for the WEBC 2000-2006, we would make a pit stop at Mary's after our training. Once Mary learned about our walk, she would never accept money for our cookie treat. My prayers go out to her many friends and family. Deepest sympathy. MJ

I first learned about Mary's shortbread cookies 15 years ago, since then became a loyal customer - I live in Buffalo, NY and appreciate all the charity works that Mary and her family have supported.

What a sad day -- the queen of shortbread is gone. I lived and worked at Yonge and Eglinton when I started my first job and met Mary in her tiny, perfect shop when she first opened. She was always so warm and friendly and always insisted on adding a few extra cookies to my bag. For years, we have shared her unforgettable cookies with our clients at Harbinger during the holiday season -- and sent them to friends and family in the US, to rave reviews. We will all miss Mary, but what a wonderful legacy she leaves.

Gary, Sharon, Jasmine & Sarina - so sorry to receive word of Granny Mary's passing. Although I never met her personally, I know how much each of you loved her and know that she is greatly missed. Sending each of you much love as you navigate your way forward.

Mary was a part of our lives and with her gone now, well, it seems a light got very much dimmer. She was fun, generous, kind and optimistic, regardless of any situations. We were together for over 50 years and still remember very young Gary and Colin swimming naked in the lake in Huntsville. Yes Gary:) So many wonderful stories to tell and rich memories to make us smile when thinking of our dear adorable friend. Ciao Mary
