MARY SHACK Obituary

MARY ANNE SHACK On January 3, 2017 Anne was taken from her family and friends. She died at Humber River Hospital after a difficult passage from this life, at the age of 85. She leaves behind her husband Stan, after 61 years of happy marriage. He is bereft. Grieving as well are her brother Stephen Nespzy and his wife Geraldine. As well, her nieces Kathleen Jones (Gareth), Donna Sheppard (Brian), Patty Sawitzki and Pamela Cooper (Jaro) and her nephews Christopher Nepszy (Cathy) and Phil Nepszy (Beverly). She was the great-aunt of Alex and Dale Jones, Mateo and Maiya Nepszy, Ella Cooper and Naomi and Niko Nepszy. Anne trained as a nurse and graduated from Queen Elizabeth Hospital of Montreal. She flew with Trans-Canada Airline for 2 years until she married Stan in 1955, in Toronto. Anne then renewed her nursing career at Humber Memorial Hospital, as Head Nurse on a surgical ward. After obtaining her B.N.Sc., Anne was the Director of Nursing at the Queensway Hospital in Mississauga. Moving to a new career, she taught a course for Registered Nursing Assistants and again a course in Adult Education. Anne and Stan travelled extensively, visiting Europe, Turkey, China and the Yukon. In later years, Anne volunteered as a Traveller's Aid at Pearson Airport for 14 years. Her love of music led her to join the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra, where she was a member for 19 years. Her creative talent led her to painting for many years, creating countless beautiful paintings. Anne's was a full and varied life; loving wife, caring aunt, nurse, teacher, musician, volunteer, artist. Such a gentle, caring person - she is sorely missed. A memorial reception will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 21st at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Oakville, 1280 Dundas St. West. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Mrs. Anne Shack was my dear teacher and mentor at Applewood Heights Secondary School during the 2-year RNA training program. She inspired me to be my best and continue pursuing a career in nursing, which I have. Anne Shack was an excellent nursing instructor and I will always remember her kindness and professionalism.

Sincere condolences to you, Stan, with the loss of your life-long partner, Anne.We in the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra had the pleasure of her company for many years. Anne was a kind, generous person who offered her help wherever needed. Over her almost 20 years with the TMO she performed in many concerts, big and small, and did her part to keep the orchestra healthy. She volunteered in many ways, particularly as the "coffee maker" at rehearsals.
On behakf of all the emmebers of the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra, I extend our heartfelt condolences to you and the family with this great loss - a loss which is ours as well.
