I knew Matt because he was the boyfriend of my dear friend Alex. I clearly remember the time she took me to a party at Laurier a few years ago for St. Patrick's day.I barely knew anyone there and was feeling that hit of social anxiety when you first walk into a new situation. Matt came up to me, seeing that I was alone and standing awkwardly by myself,and struck up a conversation. Not only did he seem to actually know a lot about me from Alex (great listener) he actually took the time to get to know me further by asking me genuine specefic questions about my life rather than filling the space between us with fictious small talk (which seems to be the case a lot these days) He was so genuine. A few months later when I first moved downtown from my parents house when I started going to school at Ryerson, Matt sent me a really sweet message wishing me luck and suggesting places in my new neighborhood. He had remembered our conversation from that party. Absolutely he sent the message because he cares about Alex and her friends but I really feel he also did it because he is a person who isn't afraid to reach out and be personal which is something a lot of young people have a hard time doing or find weird when someone reaches out to them. I cannot claim to know Matt on a deep or intimate level because that would be false. But I do know one thing that is absolutely true -
Matthew Kirby took the time to reach out to other people.
And that is something that we do not do enough to each other. I have grown into myself a lot in the past few years and I have realized that people take each other for granted and we are too quick to let people go from our lives. It's the littlest things in life that can make your day or shed some light on the darkness we all feel. To me, Matt is a shining example of someone who never failed to care just like Alex Lusis. I am so beyond happy that two people with such big hearts were able to find each other. It makes my heart bigger just thinking about the two of them.

I may not have known Matt as well as I would have liked, but it was obliviously apprant that Matt had a kind, giving heart. Whether it was as simple as driving someone home from work far out of his way, it was done without question, and always accompanied with a smile. Small acts of kindness truly dipict who we are. Keep shining, Matt.

Going to school with Tim, and Matt he was always uppbeat and just a great nice guy, always cracking jokes. When I left home for a brief period of time he talked some sense into me and helped me make some difficult decisions, always gonna remember that, I was very saddened to find out about the news. Matt, I could not be more hurt today that you are not with us. You were so different to anyone I knew, you were a brother to me, a heart so big you would give the world for anyone.
I don't know where I missed out, I wish i had stayed in touch with you more brother, this world has lost something very special, and we will forever remember that.

Matt, because of you, Tango, our beloved Golden Retriever, became part of our family. If you wouldn't mind, please give him a hug for us. We miss him.
We're missing you too. You and Tom spent a lot of time together when you played at NT. You and your parents treated Tom like he was a Kirby; as I'm sure they did with any friend who entered your home. We're so grateful for that.
You know, there are so many great memories of you Matt. Yet the ones that stand out for me are when you and Tom were together on the ice. There was no other teammate who protected Tom like you did. If an opposing player skated anywhere near the blue ice, he paid the price. Ultimately, you paid the price too and you spent a bit more time in the box than most! But there was no doubt that you made sure that everyone knew you were there for your teammates, and your teammates, especially your goalies, knew that. They appreciated you.
Matt, the Storeys will never forget your sheepish smile and loving heart.
