Meeri TURUNEN Obituary
TURUNEN, Meeri (Mary) (nee KUISMA) Always in our hearts At 96, Meeri died in her sleep on January 31, 2022. The youngest of three, Meeri was born on December 27, 1925, in Karelia, Finland. With two suitcases, $100, and speaking only Finnish, Meeri, her husband, Pentti (late 1998), and only child, Arja (Helena Hughes), arrived in Canada, in 1951. Dreams of a new home, car, and daughter's higher education were realized by Meeri's grit and assertiveness. These fuelled her to learn English, read daily, work hard, and attend church. A nature-lover, Meeri could be found at her cottage near Lake Rosseau or on picnics at Lake Simcoe. The matriarch of five generations, including the families of granddaughters, Darja Eastlake and Maija Shannon, Meeri is remembered for her faith, strength, and love of family. Her family thanks everyone at Suomi Koti and Craiglee for their constant care. A private memorial will occur in May.
