THOMAS, MERCEDES MARIA 1929 - 2021 It is with great sadness that the Thomas family announce the peaceful passing of their loving wife, mother and grandmother, on January 2, 2021. Devoted wife of Hedley for 60 years, loving mother of Paul Thomas (Mary Thomas), David Thomas (Theresa Wheeler) and Donald Thomas (Linda Tweedie) and cherished grandmother to Jack, Lillian and Ava Thomas. Mercedes was born in Barcelona, Spain, where she met her future husband, Hedley, on the beach during a summer holiday. After marrying in 1960, Mercedes followed Hedley to Canada to start their new life together. Despite life's many challenges, Mercedes and Hedley managed to build a successful family business together. With her ever-constant reminder of "little by little", what started as a small lawn mower business in 1962 is now an internationally recognized forklift company known as Stanmore Equipment Ltd./ Load Lifter Mfg. Mercedes took such pride in watching her 3 sons take on key roles within the company and grow it into a multi-faceted business. She continued to stay involved until the very end, often using her financial know-how to watch over and keep her "boys" in line. She enjoyed spending time with family, travelling, playing bridge and playing tennis, which she continued until the age of 89. A private Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Stouffville, Ontario, on a future date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Low & Low Funeral Home, 23 Main Street South, Box 388, Uxbridge L9P 1M8 (905-852-3073). In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mercedes can be made to the Sunnybrook Hospital - Odette Cancer Centre or The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
