Dear Wendy, We were so sorry that we were not even in Canada when Mike died, to be with you at such a time, to give you the support you so strongly deserved. Your marriage was one made in Heaven. Each of you so strong and so supportive of each other. Mike was so lucky to have you in his life and for you to be there with him right until the end. You were truly blessed with each other. It couldn't have been any other way. Our memory of Mike will always be of him sitting on the bench in his garden, surrounded by the beauty and the results of all his hard labour. May his memory be a blessing to you Wendy. All our love, Janet and Jonathan.

Wendy...We are all going to miss Mike, we will cherish the many Christmas Eves we spent with you both. The generosity you both showed to us as a family; the two Jacks swimming, and the many special occasions we spent together. Mike taking Malcolm, a complete stranger, to play soccer with him and his friends. A great friend who will be sorely missed.

Dear Mike,

Our meetings were few but you have left a lasting impression. You welcomed us into your home with kindness and generosity. We walked and talked together, sometimes in the sun sometimes in the snow, about gardening, cars, golf and art. We enjoyed breakfasts and BBQs in your beautiful garden and drank beers at your bar especially purchased by you to make UK beer drinkers feel at home. Joyful family occasions and celebrations were shared with you. You showed us the real Canada from Indians to Mennonite, Country Fayre to modern down town Toronto. Our times together were too brief but never to be forgotten. Thank you for your friendship.

Wendy,
So saddened to hear of Mike's passing. A few memories:

Hi Mike,
Just wanted to thank you and Wendy for being such good friends to me when I frist arrived here in Toronto in 1977. I guess you took me under your wing(s) and looked out for me as a single person. The boyfriends came and went, but when Jon finally arrived on the scene, you were not too sure at first, but soon realized he was "the one", genuine and perfect for me.

Thanks for your 1967 Mustang - it got me to many a volleyball, softball game and more importantly to the sailing club (where Jon was waiting).

Thanks for the Norwegian Christmas Eves especially the one shared with Val and Tony. Never got out of bed until 2pm Christmas Day - brutal.

Thanks for being a witness at our wedding at Old City Hall, when Wendy showed up on crutches (oh my, all those steps) and Mike in his cowboy boots and Stetson. Made for great pictures.

Thanks for all the great fun shared at your special "basement bar". Grateful to be in your beautiful garden August 1998 when I heard my Mum had passed, surrounded with all our friends. It was very comforting.

Just a sprinkling of memories - too many to share all of them here. Thanks for all the plants from 11 Helen Street, which have now found a new place in "Mikey's" special garden. The dahlias are resting in the cold room over the winter. They will all be cherished just like you cherished me all those years ago.

Save a spot for us and have a couple of rum and cokes ready to go.

Until we meet again.

Much love,
Anne and Jon

Very sorry to hear about Mike's passing. I have a lot of great memories of all the rounds of golf with Mike and Dad and the others at Glenway, and also the few times zipping home along Bathurst in the sports car.

The one thing that stands out as I think back to those days is how he used to always ask about how I was doing with genuine interest, and not just as a gesture to his friend's kid. Such a nice man.

January 18, 2013

It is so hard to think of Wendy without Mike, he was a valued member of our family and loved by all. We saw and chatted with them both at Christmas via the computer, it made our day complete.

To honour my friend Mike.

We have been friends since 1968 when we worked together at the Bank of Montreal in Winnipeg, Manitoba. We didn't see much of each other after his move to Toronto, but when we did reunite, it was always as though there had never been any lapse. I counted on Mike's phone call or letter at Christmas every year - he never failed. This year's call was singularly special. I will never forget it. It was, by any stretch, my most cherished gift. Mike was a quiet, gentle, trustful, thoughtful and honorable man. I will dearly miss my friend Mike.

Dear Wendy,
So sad to hear of Mike's passing, he was far too young. I worked for Mike at BMO Auto Finance Centre and I know him to be an honest, fair and good person with a great sense of humour. The best Bank Christmas parties we ever had were with you and Mike and will always remember having such fun at backyard BBQs at your beautiful home. Rest in Peace Mike, God Bless you Wendy, take care.

So many dear memories of my lovely Uncle Mike. One of my first is when I came home from school and Uncle Mike was visiting - he had cowboy boots and a stetson and I had a real live cowboy for an uncle, accent and all - I was so proud at school the next day. Or when he took me to my first baseball game and we encountered a very polite drunk who kept going along the rows of seats and to each and every person he passed he'd say "scuse me, pardon me" repeatedly. Mike and I loved that one and still spoke about it 20 years later! Or when we were all at a family dinner and Wendy and I said something very rude by accident and got a really bad case of the giggles! Mike did his best to keep some diplomacy and ignore the two females next to him laughing so much we were nearly on the floor! There's the time when Mike had to extinguish the Christmas pudding (that's a story all by itself!) I think one of my favourites though is when Mike took me out in his car and taught me to drive on the other side of the road. Everything seemed to be going fine until we came to a railway crossing, we have warning lights in the UK and as there were no lights I kept going - to this day I have never seen anyone move faster! He hit the brakes with his foot which was no good as they were on my side and then put his head right up to the windscreen. To say a cigarette came out fairly swiftly is an understatement! Mike always looked after Mum and me, especially after my Dad died and he bought us tickets to Canada with his work bonus. He also spent holidays looking after our garden - I'm going to plant some Iris' in your memory Mike. He was the best brother in law to my Mum and greatest Uncle to me and will be missed dearly but I know heaven will now have a wonderful garden. X

Dear Wendy, I share with all of Mike's friends, colleagues and family members my sorrow at his passing, too soon, from our lives. I remember so well our first meeting when you two arrived in Winnipeg and how Mike embraced his adopted country and was determined not to get through the winters but to enjoy them! He was a soft-spoken, thoughtful man with a unique sense of humour, a steely determination and a quiet dignity. He was so generous with his knowledge of gardening and helped me immeasurably more than once with mine. Here's to you Mike. Rest in peace. Wendy, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. Also with you, Alan.

I worked (and played) with Mike 35 years ago in the Credit Dept and it all seems like just yesterday. Mike was a direct and up front guy and marched to the beat of his own drummer. He added a lot of spark to our 'gatherings" and kept us all on our toes. He is unforgettable and I pray he is where we would all like to be, eventually. He is gone much too soon and we are sad.

Dearest Wendy,
So very sorry for the loss of such a wonderful man. He will be missed by so many.
My fondest memory of Mike was one Christmas in Plymouth. I was given a lovely scarf with hands at the end which I was then told that every time I wear it and wrap it around me I would be getting a hug from You and Mike.
I always think of you both when wearing the scarf.

Wendy, Mike's passing hits so hard and our warmest thoughts are with you. Memories of times with him are so vivid. His arrival in Canada in September 1967 had Mike in his sheep skin parka - gloves and more; it was 27 C in Winnipeg! For his first day at the bank, we had to solve the mystery of which branch but did get him there on time. Being his "best man" for your wedding was also memorable and not without some drama, it was always special with Mike - special good or special scary. So many memories and he will be so missed.

One of my favourite memories of Mike is when he First Footed for us at Douglas Park Road in 1967/68 New Years. He went out the back door with his drink and the FirstFoot bag, wearing just his suit - no outer coat! We waited and waited and waited- no knock on the front door. Father was beside himself and went upstairs to call out to Mike from the bathroom window. Turned out that Mike was not coming around to the front to complete his "duties" until he had finished his rum and stamped out "HAPPY NEW YEAR" in the snow in the back yard! When he was happy with his endeavors, the First Foot carried on - and so did we. And that was Mike's first New Years in Canada! Bless you Mike.
