Michael O'CONNOR Obituary

O'CONNOR, Michael Joseph Surrounded by his loving family, Michael Joseph O'Connor passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 28, 2018. He is survived by his beloved wife Jeanne Marie (Trudeau) and adoring daughters Louise McGill (Michael), Jane Neal (Andrew), Michelle O'Connor Coughlan (Donald), Carolyn O'Connor (Kostas) and grandchildren Stephanie, Meghan and Cameron McGill; Andrew, James and Alexandra Neal; Mikayla and Alexander Gardias, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Michael was born in Marmora, Ontario, on February 27, 1924, the son of Edward Donald O'Connor and Maude Marie Hogan. He was predeceased by his sisters Mary Donnelly, Margaret Courneya, Joan Verrault and brother Breen O'Connor. Following his graduation from St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto, he pursued a career in the pharmaceutical industry, retiring as Vice President of Marketing at A.H. Robins Canada Inc. Our father dedicated his life to his family and his greatest joy was spending time with us. We will forever cherish every moment we spent together. He was the most loving, patient and devoted husband, father and grandfather, who was loved by his entire extended family. He was a voracious reader, who possessed an endless intellectual curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. He touched the hearts of everyone he came into contact with. Not only was he adored by his family, he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He inspired everyone with his courage, his incredibly positive attitude and caring ways. Our heartfelt thanks and deepest gratitude for the outstanding and compassionate care provided by the physicians at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, including: Dr. Lisa Christjanson, Dr. Wesley Reimer, Dr. Michael Mills, Dr. Keith Greenway and Dr. Samir Kalia. We also wish to sincerely thank the nursing team who went above and beyond in caring for our father and the entire hospital staff who did so much to brighten his days. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 28th at St. Andrew Church in Oakville, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

I was a volunteer at JB with the Eating Matters Program. I would stop in and talk to Mr. O'Connor over the years he was there. The Friday before his passing I had the chance to assist him with his lunch. We had a great conversation about his life, where he lived over the years and about his family. Some patients you will never forget and he was one of them. He always had a big smile.

Michael was a second father to me; his love, support, kindness, regard for others made him easy to love, admire and respect. This giant of a man gave me my faith and my wonderful wife Jane; Michael will be missed each day and his memory in our hearts always. I felt honoured and privileged to have called him Dad most of my life!
