MICHAEL SNOW Obituary

SNOW, MICHAEL December 10, 1928 - January 5, 2023 Artist Michael Snow – filmmaker, musician, photographer, painter, sculptor, holographer, witty and eloquent inventor of ideas and images – died quietly at Toronto General Hospital after a brief respiratory infection. Though recent months had presented some health challenges, his passing coincided with a recent full retrospective of his films in Paris and a concurrent exhibition at Galerie Martine Aboucaya. His new book, My Mother's Collection of Photographs, was featured there, and a major retrospective is planned for spring-summer 2023 through Jack Shainman Gallery in New York. The New York Times and the Globe and Mail published full and impressive obituaries on January 6, 2023, for which we are grateful. He leaves his wife, Peggy Gale, son, Alexander Snow, and sister, Denyse Rynard, along with an extended family. A private funeral will be held on Friday, January 13th, and a much larger, public celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

Although I have not seen Uncle Mike in many years,
I felt a need to extend my condolences.
I lost my husband of forty years, four years ago and know how difficult and painful this time can be.
Again, my condolences.

I first met Michael Snow back in the 70's when I played with the Artist Jazz Band.....a great collaboration....and then 35 years later we reconnected and started giving two grand piano concerts at Array....we did 9 performances over 5 years!! ...he was the most amazing musician...we had an wonderful pianistic and musical connection....I am so grateful for this relationship and will truly miss this outstanding artist, friend and his wonderful laughter, a giggle full of glee.....here is a video of us https://vimeo.com/240242082.....as well many didn´t know his music background...dig him in this NFB film playing hot jazz for a living..... Love this short doc film by Don Owen (1963) in which Michael Snow on piano is featured:

I went to see Michael and CCMC play just before the pandemic. After the performance, an 8 year old girl went up to the musicians and told them how much she enjoyed their music.  They heartily engaged with her and all had a good chuckle.  I wish that I had been as brave as that 8 year old girl!
