Michael VAUGHAN, QC Obituary

VAUGHAN, QC, Michael Bryan May 18, 1939 - February 24, 2022 It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Michael Bryan Vaughan on Thursday, February 24, 2022, peacefully at his beloved home "Woodlawn." Michael lived 82 wonderful years but it was a valiant battle against idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis that he eventually succumbed to. A gentleman that was most definitely a gentle man. He was known and loved by many, especially his wife of nearly 55 years, Patricia, whom he affectionately called "Fair." He was the proud father of Vanessa, Benjamin and his wife Jenny (Andrikopoulos), Zachary and his wife Melanie (Carter) and he adored his six grandchildren, Stella and Oscar Vaughan-Verk, Logan and Michael Vaughan, Savannah and Scarlett Vaughan. There was no greater joy than listening to his colourful stories of his past adventures, the more interest and laughter they provoked, the taller the tales that he spun. Michael had so many quirky interests and witty insights that will be shared and remembered by all his loved ones for years to come. He was a well-respected eldest brother to his siblings, survived by Joe Vaughan and Angus (Anderson), Julie and Michael Sharpe, Alan and Karen Vaughan, Joan Shirriff and predeceased by his sister Seanna and Charlie Ross, brother Steven and brother Timothy. A special mention to Michael's longtime business partner of 30 years turned best friend, Keith Jebodhsingh. Keith has been the truest of true to Michael for many years, especially advocating for him during his last weeks and made sure he witnessed his final sunsets in his own home. Keith, you have transcended from friend to a member of the family. Michael was a man of great intellect and was a voracious reader. The day did not begin until all three newspapers had been read cover to cover as well as a multitude of other books and magazines. He also had a real appreciation for art and curiosities that he showcased around his home, his most treasured pieces being the ones that were painted by his dear daughter, Vanessa. Professionally, Michael devoted himself to the practise of municipal and land use law. He valued livable, walkable, vibrant communities with citizen engagement and commitment, and the importance of heritage preservation. Michael's greatest passion was architecture. He and Keith, built several admired developments. His grandfather, Joseph McCarthy Vaughan had designed and built many lovely homes in the Summerhill and Moore Park neighbourhoods and Michael frequently took students of architecture on tours of these areas, as well as the South Hill neighbourhood. He avidly supported the annual Jane's Walks. Michael was also an active member of the Arts and Letters Club, his Friday lunches were often the highlight of his week where he discussed civic issues with his friends. His most beloved places on earth remained his home and cottage. When Michael wasn't turned out in his finely tailored suits he could be found on Lake Rosseau where he spent every summer of his life, rowing, paddling or kayaking around Tobin Island or cruising around the lake on an evening cruise on one of his restored wooden launches. He loved the quiet, calm of the lake, the sunset on the water. He knew the shoreline like the back of his hand and his architectural/historical tours of the lake were legendary. The family would like to thank all the nurses and doctors who cared for Michael in the Respirology Unit at the Toronto General Hospital and Dr. Michael Sharpe, his brother-in-law, for his thoughtful insights and recommendations as Michael's disease progressed. Rest in peace Michael, you are gone but not forgotten, forever in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to UHN Foundation to support the Interstitial Lung Disease Research Fund would be appreciated by the family. My condolences for your loss. Michael was a wonderful man, and the city of Toronto would not look as it does now if it were not for him. I am better for having known him. I will remember him.

My deepest condolences to the entire Vaughan family on the passing of Michael. I remember meeting him for the first time some 40 plus years ago at a Saturday Nite Club event at the house and how he was always so kind in his words and demeanor. It was reflected by the entire family and was something I never forgot. Over the years I would hear or read something about him and it always brought a smile to my face. Big virtual hugs to everyone.

Our condolences to the Vaughan family on your loss of such an accomplished and admired member. We will always remember Mike for his ever longer antique motor launches and boathouse extensions, probably setting records that will never be broken.

Though many of us have scattered far over these many years and thus have lost touch with university friends, all who were fortunate enough to be at Western in the early 1960s will be saddened by the loss of a man who remains at the centre of our best memories. Michael Vaughan was indeed, as Brother Fidler says, a "classy" guy. Whether he was in class, giving a speech, off to a happy hour at the fraternity or going to a formal Huron College dance, he was a model of composed elegance, influential eloquence, clever humour and good sense. His contribution to university, college, fraternity marked him as a man who would go on to make us all proud. And that he has done.
As Brother Hamilton suggests, all of his Beta brothers on this address list will have been fond of him, and thus all of us will be deeply sorry to see him leave us for Wooglin.
