NORMAN FERGUSON Obituary

FERGUSON, BEng, NORMAN DAVID Norman David Ferguson BEng (born April 22, 1943) of Toronto, Ontario passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 15, 2022 at Sunnybrook Palliative Care with his loving wife Jo-Anne by his side. He was 78 years old (although he would say he was 39). He will be missed dearly by his wife, 3 daughters and their families: Lori, Andrea (Dave), Marci (Daryl) and his 5 grandchildren: Alexis, Mackenzie, Benjamin, Jackson and Audrey. Norm was born in Ottawa, Ontario to Violet and Robert Ferguson and at a young age moved to Toronto where he grew up in East York. This is where he met lifelong friends who all eventually started canoe trips where many great memories and stories were born (and a number of Grumman canoes were harmed!). After graduating from Engineering Physics at University of Toronto, he went on to enjoy a long career at IBM. He always looked forward to a great party and socializing with friends, whether it be Friday night cocktails in Muskoka, the curling afterparties or New Year's Eve with great neighbourhood friends. He also truly loved going to the gourmet dinner parties which have continued to endure for more than 50 years with the same group of close friends. As an avid traveller, Norm loved getting out and seeing the world. Some of his favourite trips included Australia, New Zealand and Europe. He spoke often of great ski trips to Austria and Whistler however his bucket list trip was to South Africa where they went on fabulous safaris, visited Victoria Falls and enjoyed wine tasting in Stellenbosch. "Careful Norm", as he was affectionately referred to, loved spending his time up in Muskoka where he met his beloved wife Jo-Anne of 49 years at Clevelands House. He had great memories of times spent with friends at the cottages near Morinus. He loved doing everything outdoors including canoeing, tennis and general puttering around the cottage. Most of all he loved sitting in the cottage gazebo looking out over Lake Rosseau with a drink in hand alongside his family. A "Celebration of Life" will be held at a later date in the spring of 2022. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Sunnybrook Hospital (https://donate.sunnybrook.ca/tribute).

My heart aches to have heard of Norms passing today! I will always treasure my very fond memories of time spent in Haliburton be it going for an early morning run, afternoon tea on the beach, admiring how Norm could waterski right off the dock on one ski or just plan enjoying life.
Joanne, Lorianne, Andrea and Marci Thinking of all of you!

I was just thinking about Norman today and wondering if he was still alive. His mother and my mother were first cousins, so Norman and I were second cousins. I hadn't seen him since he was home from university and visiting his parents. He hadn't shaved in a number of days and he thought that it was funny to give me a "whisker rub", as it was called. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Very sad to hear the news. I worked with Norm for quite a few years and golfed with him many times after work. He was a great guy to work with, one of the kindest, and gentlest people I knew. He was always upbeat and had a very even demeanour even when things were going wrong. A great role model for everyone who worked with him. My thoughts are with you.

Norm and I became great friends as we worked many years together at IBM. I miss his candor and always calming nature with a tremendous sense of humour! My sincere condolences to his lovely wife and life partner, that he spoke of often and fondly, and of course his extended family left behind. In my prayers for his last journey, Ron.
