Pete was my mentor and trusted colleague for many years at the Black Swan. A true friend who, in his musical wisdom and industry experience, diligently and patiently advocated for the best live music experience possible. Pete had a passion for people helping them realize their full potential - his humility and grace will be missed but never forgotten. Just before performance time, Pete would always ask me, "How am I doing?" - we got this Pete and will forevermore.

one night at the swan, pete and i were talking about getting older and feeling that devil reality closing in. i was trying to rationalize it all when pete leaned in and said, "you know i died once.'' that stopped me right in my pontifications, and i asked him what he meant. he told me that during his most recent medical event he had died and found himself in a place where he felt so at peace and full of spiritual benevolence, he was almost disappointed when he was brought back and realized his time had not come yet. he said, "pete, since then, the thought of death has never frightened me or made me doubt the existence of something else...something after."
i believe for the rest of pete's wonderful life he was informed by this experience and was determined to make real his musical dreams and to use his long time experience in the music business to help others he had recently met, and some old friends, with theirs.
pete became a wonderful songwriter and performer and a fearless promoter of other people and events in the toronto music world. i never saw pete angry or perturbed during any of these endeavours, on the contrary, i believe pete had seen what was next for him and been given precious time to make his earthly musical dreams come true.
i was always happy to see pete at the swan and enjoyed whenever we had time for a talk and drink. what a gracious man he was, smart, talented and a pleasure to be around.
dear pete, you have left a hole in the hearts of all who knew you, but i'm sure you are in that lovely place you once envisioned, at peace and one with it all forever. fair well my friend.

I met Pete in 2008 during Winterfolk while taking photos of the event. Pete was inspired by my photography and often encouraged me to keep going with it, and in doing such by giving me the opportunity to film, and take photos of various events he would host.
Pete was talented musician. A kind, gentle soul who touched many and dearly loved. I will miss him dearly.

Pete was an avid and passionate supporter of those of us who were part of Toronto's rich music history - the Yorkville scene, the recording artists of the 60's. He brought new life to those of us who felt our time in the "biz" was over. I'll be forever grateful for Pete's support and belief in me. He was a generous, kind and unegotistical man with a HUGE heart, and a lot of talent. RIP Pete. You'll always be remembered fondly by hundreds of us.

The white-bearded greeter at the Pearly Gates isn't the only St. Peter in Heaven now. Pete Otis was a giving, lovely person who uplifted all around him with his humour, love of life and faith in his dreams and in others. Pete was a giant in the local live music community as an impresario, a soulful songwriter and as a mentor and enabler to many. He will forever be remembered for all these things.
