To all Mr. G's family - I'm so sorry for your loss. When I first met Mr. G I was a little bit afraid of him, until I realized that he was kidding around with me - he had such a great sense of humour. My mum used to buy fabric paints from your store, in the '90s, and my first venture into Gwartzman's was with her. I've traded stories about Mr. G with countless artists in the city, and he will be sorely missed by all. May his memory always be a blessing - Baruch dayan ha-emet.
My sincerest condolences,

When I became an art teacher, I would head to Gwartzman's to pick up supplies for my students. Mr. Gwartzman was always helpful and clearly cared about the students who would be making art with his supplies. When I told him I would be traveling to India to teach, he shook his head, called me stupid and asked why I would do such a thing to my parents. I always appreciated his candid role as a community figurehead. My deepest sympathies to his wonderful family.

As soon as I was old enough to venture out on my own, I looked up art supplies in the yellow pages, took the TTC, and checked out all the art supply stores that I could find. After that day, I shopped around no more, and only chose. to come to Mr. G's store. So, for the past 45 years, Gwatzman's has been my favorite store in Toronto. I mean that. My absolute favorite. Mr. G. always gave me great advice, and deals. I've grown quite attached to his presence in this world, and he played a huge role, in my journey from art passion, to art profession. He truly was a lovely person. My deepest condolences. He will be greatly missed.

As a little girl of 6, in the early 70s, I used to run into Gwartzmans and head for the counter. Mr. Gwartzman and my Grandmother, Rachelle, were in an earlier time business associates both running businesses and later friends. I would arrive and he would pass me the crayons and note pad he would say draw, draw, draw. I would draw all the magic of Kensington. He helped to create that magic. He will be missed.

Paul Gwartzman will always have a place in my heart as helping foster the early steps in my art career. His legacy is timeless and we are crushed by the pain of his absence. Thank you for everything.
Rest in peace, sir.

As a student at the U of T Architecture School in the early 1970's, I was a regular customer at Gwartzman's and talked to Paul every time I was in the store. After graduation, I moved all over Canada and finally returned to Toronto more than 20 years later. I walked in to the store one day after my return. Paul was in his usual place. I walked toward him. He did not move a muscle. When I got to about six feet from him, I heard "Where've you been?" I was stunned.
Fabulous guy, sad loss.
Godspeed Paul.

If Mr G deciphered what you wanted to accomplish as an artist he would bend over backwards to help you, sending staff to the basement to find some vintage linen while making sure you were going to make the best use of it, listening to queries about art materials and finding the best solution to any creative dilemma. If you were a student struggling with materials or know-how he would smarten you up, steer you in the right direction, and send you on your way spending less than you might have spent without his direction. In recent years when I would drop in for supplies he would always be there sitting behind the cash register, always present in the business he loved, always ready to engage in witty banter and to talk about the history of the artists he knew throughout the years, helping artists new and established right to the very end. My world already feels smaller knowing he is gone.
Vale, Mr G. You were a remarkable and generous humanitarian. Condolences to Jacklyn and the staff at Gwartzman's, and to family and friends he leaves behind.

I appreciate Mr G as a valuable resource, advisor and supplier since 1976 when professors sent me and many cohorts to the little shop on Spadina south of the neon palm of El Macambo.
Mr G had a fondness for little children because my young daughter from the ages of 6 to 12 would receive a warm smile and gentle manner which was delightful to me to witness. As college students there was a sense of awe and perhaps apprehension because of Mr G's no nonsense demeanour. Yet, given respect and polite approach it was reciprocated. I still shop there and will miss his presence.
Condolences to his family and friends and to the many staff and other patrons like me who will miss him.

I am SO sad to hear the news about Mr Gwartzmans. I have been coming to Gwartzmans for 20 years, I will never forget his lovely presence, even with his gruff manner he always had a twinkle in the eyes and always remembered my name and was there to help with his lovely smile.
My deepest condolences to everyone that mourns him today, I wish you a long life.
All the best
