I was fortunate to work with Paul at Daedalian, Telus and Atlantis. Paul was a superb visionary, seeing so many opportunities and using his entrepreneurial spirit to successfully achieve so very much. As a leader, Paul was able to tackle the tough tasks and make his points while at the same time garner incredible loyal support from his employees. As a man, Paul was so smart, so insightful, so supportive and so accomplished in many many ways. I know that all of Paul’s family and friends already know all of this… Daedalian, Greek myth an Athenian architect and inventor who built the labyrinth for Minos on Crete and fashioned wings for himself and his son Icarus to flee the island … Paul those wings served you so very well on earth, now off to heaven…

Paul Arie Maasland was my friend, classmate, and colleague for more than thirty years. A Christian but not a church goer, Paul was generous, warm, ruthlessly honest, and always demanding of quality.

He was born in Australia of an American mother and Dutch father. His parents met at university in the United States. Before coming to Canada with his family to begin his high school education he lived in Australia, Turkey, and West and East Pakistan.

Paul’s father Marinus Maasland or “Rene”, was an authority on irrigation and water quality. He worked on the planning of major international development projects. Rene’s opinion, or expectation, was a powerful motivator in Paul’s life even to today. Paul’s mother, Mildred, typed each of Rene’s reports and I’m sure added a lot in terms of structure and language. They were a team.

Paul’s two sisters, Lisa and Anne are independent and accomplished women. With their example, Paul, in his professional life, always gave and expected the very best from the women he encountered.

Paul and I met at the University of Toronto in Canada’s top engineering program, N-Sci. We had exactly complimentary skills. I had an intuitive grasp of the physics and could make the experiments work. Paul understood the mathematics so well that the physics was easy. He said “Andy, the physical world obeys the formulas so if you understand the math you can do the assignments.” I said, “Paul, the physical world has its own structure and law. If you understand the physical world then you’ll understand the Math which was developed to explain it.” We were both right and we collaborated shamelessly to get through the next three years.

Paul first worked for Bell Canada, and then founded Daedalian Systems and for four years developed computer applications, many for his former colleagues at Bell. Working from home, he developed and maintained these systems with an “acoustic coupler” which tied his phone line to a computer terminal at 1/10,000 the speed of the Internet Access we enjoy in our homes today. To print out the source code for a complete system took many hours and was only done occasionally. Paul carefully annotated each listing with a very fine blue pen. Once he was satisfied with his changes on paper, he would type each into the terminal, save it, and begin to test the result. Many weeks or months later, his client would ask for changes again. Putting aside the blue pen, he took an identical green pen and started the process again. Later he would use an identical red pen, and finally would resort to black, the last colour available in this very fine line of quality pens.

I joined Paul at Daedalian in 1984, beginning a seventeen-year collaboration together. We took offices downtown in the financial district and started to grow our business. Paul’s integrity stood out from the very beginning. When he explained to a prospective client exactly how we would do things, they understood and had faith in him. With Paul’s leadership we always followed through, regardless of the cost. While he made us equal partners, I was in fact his lieutenant and as we added a third equal partner, Dave Jones, and then a team of eight project directors, and then growing to three hundred people, Paul’s judgement and Paul’s vision always ruled.

All of our clients loved and respected Paul but it was on our personnel that he had the biggest impact.

To begin, Paul led by example. But it was a very demanding example. People who could do the work thrived in an environment where challenge was there for the taking. Others who could not organize themselves, or who had other priorities, just had to leave. One of my roles at Daedalian was to fire underperformers. Surprisingly, many thanked me for letting them off the hook.

For hundreds of people, Daedalian was their introduction to our profession in Canada. We hired recent university graduates and new Canadians, whether from Eastern Europe or Asia. Paul’s genius was to develop a method to take new people, train them in “The Daedalian Way”, and then provide immediate feedback on the quality and productivity of their work. Paul’s motivation was essentially humane. He loved the people we worked with and shared their pride in a job well done. He wanted everyone with the talent to have a chance at our work and in his very pragmatic way he invested his time and ours in an effort to make it possible for them.

Another example; on Tuesday evenings Paul lined up two teachers to give free English classes to our staff. One was for Eastern Europeans and the other for Asians. Because everyone had a university degree, they could read and write English but many had trouble with pronunciation. There were two “accent reduction” classes because those two groups had different challenges.

As Daedalian grew, finance became a bigger challenge. In 1999 the Y2K bubble burst. We had added more than 100 staff that year and suddenly there was no new work coming in. Really we should have fired 100 people or more but Paul could not bring himself to do it and proposed a new business plan. We found six million dollars in venture capital and listed Daedalian on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Throughout Daedalian employees had an opportunity to invest and Paul made certain each made a profit on their investment.

In 2001, Telus purchased Daedalian and Paul, Dave Jones, and I promised to stay with TELUS for two years. Paul was chosen to run Daedalian from within TELUS, but really there was no place for a visionary leader in a big phone company. It was Bell Canada all over again and Paul left us a within a few years of our joining TELUS.

Paul then became an Angel Investor, providing advice and seed capital to half a dozen small companies, helping them with their growth plans. Over the past two years, Paul has led the formation of Verdant Investments, a venture capital company. Our loss today means there will be a leadership gap there.

Paul decided early in his adult life not to raise his own family. He still had many loving people around him. My own children loved him and still call him Uncle Paul, remembering a very kind, patient, and funny man who was sincerely interested in whatever they were doing and who spoke with them exactly as he would to an adult.

Paul met his match in Lee Stanton who already has a family and who shared many interests with Paul including their Boxers, eight of which will race across Lake Muskoka to join Paul on Lee’s swimming raft. He always had pictures of those dogs in his wallet. When Lee needed to move to London to be with her grandchildren, Paul bought her a house there and continued to speak with her daily and to see her on weekends.

I don’t know the meaning of our loss today. I can’t help you to understand that terrible event. I can only tell you what a unique, wonderful, and decent person we have lost and I can only ask you to pray for his survivors, particularly Lee Stanton and Mildred Maasland but also for the many others who have been touched by his life.
As most of you know, there is an ongoing police investigation and the family has no details. Today’s service is a celebration and thanksgiving of Paul’s life.

My sympathy to Paul's family at this sad time. Paul dreamed, and could make his dreams come true. That alone set him apart. He created a workplace that was different than any other. Paul, I still say a bad day at Daedalian was better than a good day anywhere else. For creating that environment, I thank you.

I am very shocked and saddened after hearing of Paul’s passing. He was a great man. Paul was liked by many and especially through his Daedalian days brought joyous memories to those around him which will never be forgotten. My sincere condolences to Lee and Paul’s family. We will all miss Paul greatly! My prayers are with you.

Paul, you will be missed. It is my honour of knowing you for twenty years. You were such a great mentor at work. Too young you were taken away from us. God help serve the justice so that you may rest in peace.

Paul was an excelptional, excellent man - a good friend with a great sense of humour, a generous heart and a decent chess game. We we worked together, laughed together, drank together and flew the airways for three years on behalf of Atlantis Systems.

My deepest sympathies to his family and many, many friends.
