Paul Mitchell Obituary

PAUL MITCHELL The Mitchell family is sad to announce the unexpected and untimely death of Paul Douglas Mitchell, age 67. A longtime resident of Richmond Hill and an avid sailor, Paul passed away in the final moments of October 1, 2011 in a tragic boating accident off of Ward's Island in Toronto Harbour. Paul was born in Toronto's east end on September 24, 1944. The youngest son of Fred and Marjorie Mitchell (following Jack (deceased) and Bill), Paul left school early to become an Iron Worker, travelling throughout much of Ontario as he plied his trade. Before getting married at the age of 27, Paul and a friend took their motorcycles throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico. On the way home, he met Becky J. Nielsen, then resident in Minnesota, whom he married three years later in a quiet rural ceremony. Less than a year later, Paul and Becky relocated to Toronto, briefly, before heading to Europe for an extended adventure. In January 1975, their first son, Brennan Nielsen Mitchell, was born, followed by their second son, Ryan Fredrick Christopher Mitchell in December 1976. The early years of family life saw yearly relocations, but by the summer of 1979 the family had settled in Richmond Hill, where they remained for the next 32 years. Paul's professional life was a great source of pride and inspiration to him. As an Iron Worker, the height of his career came during the building of the CN Tower, where he performed the difficult and dangerous job of topping off what was then the world's tallest free-standing structure. Paul worked for several different structural steel companies over the years, retiring as President of Canron Construction Corp. However, his restless character was not suited to a life of leisure and, after some consulting work, Paul took the helm of the Ontario Erectors' Association, becoming a professional negotiator. At the time of his death, Paul was also Canadian Chairman of the International Foundation and the head management trustee of the Iron Workers' Pension Fund. Throughout his long and storied career, he never ceased to delight in those around him. When he wasn't working, Paul could often be found at the Aquatic Park Sailing Club -- a place that provided him with many dear companions and adventures over the years -- or hitting the auction circuit. He was especially fond of socializing with old friends and neighbours on his veranda, sharing his love of fine wine and humourous story telling. Above all, he loved his wife, Becky and took great pride in the accomplishments of his children, with whom he was uncommonly close. He was looking forward to retirement so that he could spend more time with Ryan, Amy and their daughters, Emily and Ava (expected) in Florida. Paul was a larger-than-life character, a man of overwhelming generosity and kindness and a source of inspiration and strength to many. His appetite for life was unbounded; words are far too paltry to express the extent to which he will be missed. A memorial service will be held in his honour on Wednesday, October 12th at the United Church in Richmond Hill (at Yonge and Centre), commencing no later than 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. Anyone who knew him will be welcome to say a few words in remembrance. Donations to either the Salvation Army or the United Church of Richmond Hill will be appreciated.

I am 44 years old and remember reading Mr. Mitchell's name in the local paper. Being a fan of the cn tower, Paul became my hero being the foreman who bolted on the last piece of the antenna and then standing up and waving to celebrate. I still have the news paper articles from April 2nd 1975. I will now cherish them more than ever. God bless you Paul, you made Toronto proud. -- A True fan.

I found myself thinking about Paul everyday and what a great loss this is to all who knew him and those that will now never get the chance. I plan to take some lessons from my brief 7 year friendship with Paul, never speak ill of others; always be proud of your family no matter what; take an interest in those around you; be generous with your time and find the funny in everything. With much love, Sue

Dear Becky, Brennan and Ryan:

I consider it a great privilege to have met and laughed with Paul from time to time over the past seven years.

I think of him as one of the very few true Renaissance men I have ever known. His knowledge and wit astonished me.

Today's service was wonderful and a fit tribute to Paul. I am terribly sorry for your loss.

Becky, Brennan and Ryan,
Words really can't express how sad I am for your loss. Having shared in your lives for the past 37 years, I know what a void will be left without "the big guy" around. One thing I do know is that you will always have the memories of all the wonderful things you did as a family and in the coming months you'll be able to look back on those wonderful times and hopefully it will help to ease the pain. With much love,

Becky, Brennan and Ryan,
Paul, simply put, was one of the finest people I have ever known. Having an office in the same building as his, we saw each other almost every day. He would drop in or I would see him and we would chat.
He was a man of immense talent and stature, but with an air of humility. He was funny, interesting, generous and kind. He was instrumental in helping our son's career, just because he could. He would never take credit for it.
The last time I saw him he was handing out the 2011 timeplanners he did every year, typical generosity of Paul.
Everyone in the building is shocked and saddened, and we will all miss him, his ready smile, quick wit, and friendship but our lives were enriched to have known him.
From Marg, Cory and I, as well as all here at 10350 Yonge Steet our deepest condolances, and our thoughts and payers are with you.

We were so sad to hear of Paul's tragic passing. He was a great friend and colleague to my dad, Stu Eccles, and a family friend we all enjoyed spending time with. Dad loved to refer to Paul as "the tallest man in the world" after their work together building the CN Tower. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Mitchell family.

Becky, Brennan, Ryan and Amy. Such a tragic loss! Our hearts and prayers go out to you as you move forward without Paul. May the knowledge that he will be sorely missed by all that knew him be of comfort. We will always remember him fondly as a man who embraced life and those around him with a generous spirit and warm heart. Mike told us of Paul`s unforunate boating accident and it is hard to believe, as we were at Mike & Cathy`s place on Saturday as we have relocated to Toronto to wait for Lillian`s lung transplant and Mike had just said Paul always asked how his mom was doing.
Our thoughts & prayers are with you and the family, unforunately, Lil has a hospital appointment and I will be unable to attend the services.
Just sitting here I remember when we where in Florida, I think the Fontaine Blue Hotel and a number of us rented sea-doos which were fairly new, and howw we enjoyed it.
I enjoyed working with Paul, both as a supertindent and as a trustee on the IronWorker Plans
