PAUL QUILTY Obituary

PAUL EDWARD HANLEY QUILTY At home, suddenly, cushioned by his favourite chair, on Sunday, October 4, 2015, in his 91st year. Born in Collingwood June 25, 1925 to John Joseph Quilty and Grace Mary Hanley. At age 10, during the Great Depression, his family moved to Midland, east side of town. After high school, he apprenticed as an Electrician at Midland Ship Yards, then installed lines for Barber & Haskill throughout the area. He began his studies at St. Michael's College (University of Toronto), age 27, graduating with a degree in History and Geography, followed by a Bachelor of Education. He taught high school at St. Mike's College School (1956-57), St. Charles College in Sudbury (1958-59), MPDHS (1960-65) and Penetanguishene Secondary School (1966-90). A tough but fair marker, he filled the classroom with energy and a sense of sublime knowledge. He inspired many students, not only with daily challenges but on "field trips" to Europe during March break. He was awarded The Big Wheel. He played on and coached high school / community teams in baseball, hockey and basketball and was well known as "Scooter" on the diamonds of Simcoe County. During the '60s, '70s and '80s, he was Chairman of the Midland Parks Board, Midland PUC and a member of the Huronia District Hospital Board. He was a longtime Director for the Ontario Golf Association, President of the Midland Golf and Country Club and always active in St. Margaret's Parish. He made great soups. Upon retirement, he and his wife continued their intrepid ways in Wrzesnia (Poland), becoming the first volunteer Canadian English teachers in that country after the end of communist rule. Further travels brought many adventures with family and friends; the last, in February of this year, an uproarious trip to Nashville to see some NHL hockey and honky tonks. Ever youthful, he almost got asked for ID at the arena bar. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years Mary Jo (Hargadon), his sister Anne D'Orazio, children John (Veronica), Mary-Pat (Dave), Peter, Owen (Maureen) and Michael, grandchildren Patrick, Laura, Matthew, Frances, Paul, Eamon, Caitlin, Robert and Anna, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by his parents and siblings William, Marg McInnis (Gerry), John (Sybil), Mary Arbour (Cecil) and Michael. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret's Church in Midland on Thursday, October 8th. Interment to follow in St. Margaret's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or another charity that supports the poor. Arrangements entrusted to Nicholls Funeral Home, Midland.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Mr Quilty was always inspiring and motivating, challenging us to use our minds and hearts to connect with history, learn from it, and make choices for a better world. I will remember his marvelous smile, his great sense of humour (Papa Smurf!), and his obvious love and adoration for his family, his faith, and his community. I am sure my Dad will be happy to welcome him, too, along with other wonderful PSS teaching Alumni. Thank you for the memories, the support, and the inspiration, Mr. Quilty!

I was in Mr. Quilty's History class at MPDHS the morning of J.F. Kennedy's assination. He was called to the office and when he returned, he quietly told us the morbid news. We students learned so much from that great man that day. He always had a big smile and was a genuine person. He will be missed.
