Paul Raina Obituary

RAINA, Paul Thomas - Paul died peacefully Sunday morning, January 18, 2009 after a year long campaign against cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends to the end and maintained his sense of humour throughout. He is survived by his father Ralph, and stepmother Catherine, his wife Kelly, his beloved children Zane and Quinn, and his stepsister and stepbrother Christine and Trevor. Predeceased by his mother Mildred (Millie). Awesome uncle to Lucas and Hannah, brother-in-law to Manuel and Sarah, son-in-law to Manuel and EIisa Santos. Paul dedicated his life to his country through his political involvement, he was a great believer in democracy and loved to fight for the underdogs. We know he is campaigning in heaven. We have lost a great Canadian. Visitation will be held at the TRULL ''EAST TORONTO'' FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTRE, 1111 Danforth Ave. (one block east of Donlands Subway), 416-465-4661 from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009. A further celebration of his life will be held at The Seanachai Pub across the street that same day. Visitation will also be held in the Grant Brown Funeral Home, 805 Prescott St., Kemptville, Ontario on Friday, January 23, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kemptville, Ontario on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall. I'm so sorry to hear about Paul. The thing I remember most about him was his great love for his children and wife, he talked about them constantly. It was a loss when he left our company and it is a loss that he has passed on - but he has left his lasting legacy behind.

I was truly saddened to learn of Paul's passing and have many fond memories of him. He was larger than life and has, undoubtedly, left a void in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Although I had not seem him for many years, his warmth and kindness were never forgotten. Our loss is Heaven's gain!

As cousins we lived across the country but when we got together with Paul it was always a lot of laughs. From pulling a toboggan behind the boat as kids to a tequila night as adults, we never knew what would happen. We visited Paul recently and although he was going through a difficult time, his sense of humour remained. A different ethnic lunch buffet every day while we were there was the accomplished mission. We will miss Paul but will cherish the memories. Zane & Quinn's time with their dad was much too short.

We were very saddened to hear of Paul's passing. Although we did not share much time together, given the fact we lived so far apart, whenever we visited with cousin Paul, there was a guarantee that fun would be had by all. Every one of my memories of visits with Paul include laughing so hard my sides and face hurt. Even though our visits were few and far between, the time and distance melted away as soon as the visit began. We know how much he loved his family because his voice was full of pride, especially when he was talking about his children. It is so sad that one with such a zest for life would have his cut short. We are all better people for having had Paul in our lives and he will be sorely missed.

Our families joined after Paul had moved out but he just like a cousin or even a brother. Every conversation picked up right where we left off - days, months, or longer in between but it didn't matter.

Zane and Quinn will grow up missing out on many years with their dad, but the years they had will always be with them.

Dan & I send you our most sincere condolences on the loss of your well-loved son, father, friend & colleague. I have not seen or talked with Paul Raina for over 25 years, but from 1977 through 1981, I worked with Carleton-Grenville Liberals trying twice to get him elected MPP. Paul came second during both provincial elections. Later, we both worked hard on the Ontario Liberal Party leadership contest in 1982 for Richard Thomas, the environmental candidate, who came a respectable third behind Mr. Peterson and Ms. Copps.

While Paul and I didn't stay in touch, I have fond memories of the days of our "Liberal" struggles in the trenches. He had a great spirit and never shied away from a challenge.

I will miss Paul. He was a man of great humour and generosity of spirit.

The last time we met for lunch a few years ago we spent a long afternoon discussing the joys of fatherhood and family. That was Paul: personal, real and sharing.

My deepest sympathies go out to Kelly, Zane and Quinn.

His laughter stilled,
But never gone from mind.
His caring missed,
But never lost to memory.
His friendship faded,
But never forgotten.
Fun, compassion and steadfast friendship…
I could never equal in return.
Thank you Paul…
Au revoir…and we will.
