Peter Alcock Obituary

PETER FREDERICK GRANVILLE ALCOCK Born January 5, 1921, in Great Yarmouth, England, Peter passed away after a lengthy illness on Monday, June 29, 2009, at Errinrung Nursing Home in Thornbury, Ontario. He was the beloved husband of Mary for 66 years and dear father of Janet Howden, Susan Ronson (Jim), Bill (Victoria), and Timothy (Cindy) and dear Grandfather of ten and Great-Grandfather of two. Peter was predeceased by his brother Eric and is survived by his brother Bert and sister Diana, both in England, and by his many nieces and nephews. A Veteran of World War II, R.A.F. Bomber Command, Peter flew two tours of OPS and finished the war as a Pathfinder on Mosquitoes. He rose in rank from Flt./Sgt. to Squ./Ldr. and was also awarded the D.F.C. for bravery in action. After the war, his career with the Norwich Union took him from England to South Africa with his young family where two more children duly arrived. He then was transferred to Canada where he lived the rest of his life in Thornhill before retiring happily to Thornbury where he was able to build his beloved boat, the Red Pelican, and enjoy sailing on Georgian Bay. The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Errinrung Nursing Home for all their care and help in difficult times. Rest in peace dear Peter -- we will miss you very much. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be conducted at St. George's Anglican Church, Clarksburg, Friday, July 10, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. As your expression of sympathy, and in lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated and may be made through the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, THE VALLEY CHAPEL, P.O. Peter hired me at the Norwich Union in 1962 when I was 16 years old.
His infectious smiles and hearty laughs dissipated any nervousness which I may haveI felt ....He is a lovely kind man and a role model for all.

I knew Peter many years ago when we worked at the head office of Norwich Union in Toronto. He was a lovely man, always smiling. I had the great pleasure in meeting him again many years later when he moved next door to my cousins in Thornbury. My sincere condolences to his family.
