BUCKLEY, Peter C. Longtime Canadian Press reporter, foreign correspondent and senior editor, died July 26, 2008 at Briton House, aged 74, of complications from emphysema. Peter began as a copy boy with the news agency in Montreal at 16, subsequently working in Canadian Press bureaus at Quebec City, Vancouver, Victoria and Toronto as well as overseas in the Congo, Cyprus, London, Moscow and Washington, with briefer assignments to dozens of other countries. In 1979 he began 10 years as general news editor at head-office in Toronto, directing CP's daily coverage of Canadian and world news, and then became supervising editor until his retirement in 1993, after 43 years of service. For a decade after 1992, he had worked as a volunteer at Casey House Hospice. Born October 25, 1933 in Montreal to George E. and Ada (Tylee), Peter leaves his sister Patricia Hadley (the late David) of Westerhall Point, Grenada, and his brother John Buckley and wife Diane of St. Catharines, ON, as well as nephews and nieces Michael Buckley (Christine) of St. Catharines, Karen Bourne (the late Tom) of Vancouver, Kim Hadley of Beaconsfield, QC, Lia Hadley (Giuseppe Cavallaro) of Luebeck, Germany, and Daniel Hadley (Jennifer Beeman) of Montreal, along with 13 great-nephews and -nieces. His parents and his nephew Stephen Buckley predeceased him. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
