PETER DICKENS Obituary

DICKENS, PETER KENELM It is with profound sadness that the family of Peter Kenelm Dickens, announce his peaceful passing, on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Scarborough General Hospital, at the age of 92. Born May 28, 1929 in London, Ontario, he was the third child of Harry Blundell Dickens and Ida Temple Silk. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Helen Dickens (McKay) and brother Harry Brian Dickens (Moira). He will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Lois (John predeceased), son Gary (Judy) and daughters Debbie (Romeo) and Linda (Larry). As a devoted grandfather he leaves behind his grandchildren Peter (Erin), John, Monica, Derek, David (Rebecca), Adrian, Michael (Diana), Christopher (Shannon) and Julie (Jessica). Great-grandfather (GG) to Walter, Alice and Harper. In spring of 1947, while isolating at home with the mumps and listening to the radio, he learned of the Academy of Radio Arts, a broadcasting school started by CBC announcer and later actor Lorne Green. In May 1948, he completed the course as a "Graduate of Distinction". He was then hired as an announcer for CHLO in St. Thomas, Ontario, where he eventually became Assistant Manager. In May 1958, he auditioned and a won a newscaster's job at CHUM in Toronto, where he handled the vital morning newscast responsibilities for the next 11 years. In 1969, he transferred to the new CHUM FM station and helped establish its news policy. The opportunity to be a News Director arose with an offer from CFGM in Richmond Hill, in October 1972, which he accepted. In June 1977, he joined CFRB and in early 1978 became part of the popular morning news show with Wally Crouter where he remained until his retirement on May 14, 1994, exactly 46 years to the day after his very first radio broadcast. To celebrate his retirement, he enjoyed a train trip to British Columbia and a 2-week cruise to Alaska with his wife Margaret. Although he lived a very long and joyful life, unfortunately his health recently declined and he was affected by COVID and we lost our father earlier than we had hoped. Due to COVID restrictions, no visitation or funeral will be held at this time and a celebration of life will take place at the Toronto Hunt, on what would have been his 93rd birthday, May 28th. I will always cherish the memories of growing up in Guildwood with Peter as our neighbour across the street. Peter and my dad, Bill Moore, shared many happy times in each other´s basements, with their HO model trains. Oh, they loves their trains. When my dad passed, Peter was a frequent visitor for my mother, Gwen. He will be missed.

I was fortunate enough to work with Peter both at CHUM and later at CFGM. Peter was simply the best, most professional newsman I knew. We used to talk model trains sometimes...oh how he loved his trains. I last spoke with Peter at Dick Smyth's memorial service and when he was ready to leave, walked with him a couple blocks to his car. I will really miss seeing and talking with Peter at CHUM events.

Sad news. I very much admired Peter long before before I joined CHUM News in the late 60s and got to know him in person as a broadcaster with high standards and integrity.

The first time I met Peter was in the mid 1980s when I worked for an advertising agency and he did a voice-over for an audio-visual I was working on. Imagine my surprise when in 1989, I moved to Guildwood and Peter turned out to be my next door neighbour! We remained neighbours until he moved into the nearby retirement home last November. Peter and I shared many conversations about the glory days of radio over those 32 years and even though I never worked in the industry, we knew many of the same people. I'll miss those conversations on our driveways in the spring when his tulips start to surface and we survey the new growth in our gardens. Thanks for all the great chats, Peter - you'll be missed.

Peter and I worked together at CFRB. He was a friend, mentor, coach and golfing buddy. I am very fortunate our paths crossed and feel my life is better having known him. I will miss him and cherish the memories.

Peter and I were co-workers at Radio Station CHLO in St. Thomas Ontario when the station opened in the late 1940s, Peter as one of the top Announcers and I as Traffic Manager for the short period between the station's inception and my departure after marrying a Torontonian in 1952.

Peter was a most likeable person and a good friend, and although I lost track of him once I moved to Toronto with my husband and started having babies (six of them), I often thought of Peter and the other friends I'd left behind at Radio Station CHLO in St. Thomas.

May Peter rest in peace, and may his family be comforted by the memory of the years Peter was with them.

Sincerely,
Eileen Koyama

one of my heroes growing up, Peter was a constant presence on the radio and the man I wanted to emulate. Finally, out of the blue, he took a chance on a totally untried rookie and hired me as a sports stringer for CFGM, my first effort being the Canadian Open at Mississauga G.C. in 1974. Although my foray into broadcasting ended a decade later, those 10 years were the best of my life, and I'll forever be grateful to Peter for giving me that first opportunity. RIP, old friend and may there never be any more 3-putt greens.
