Philip Kilbride Obituary

Philip L. Kilbride, Ph.D., age 70, a resident of West Norriton, passed away at home on September 15, 2012. He was the husband of Marrion Wathuti (nee Nderitu) Kilbride and his former wife, Janet E. (nee Capriotti) Kilbride. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on September 5, 1942, to the late Philip J. Kilbride and Natalie (nee Hayward) Kilbride. He was a graduate of Palmyra High School (PA), Millersville University, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Missouri. An internationally-renowned anthropologist, scholar, teacher, and author of seven books and many scholarly publications, he was a professor of Anthropology at Bryn Mawr College for 43 years. As such, he touched the lives of many students, colleagues, and friends. His passion for anthropology was surpassed only by his devotion and love for his family and friends. If anyone expressed a need or he felt their need, he would happily volunteer to help. His mind was always anticipating his next project. He loved reading, travel, walking, classical music, and discussing enumerable topics, his favorites being politics and religion. He was truly a man for all seasons. He is survived by his daughters, Candice M. Kilbride of Conshohocken, Natalie Wagaki Kilbride, his son Roy Nderitu Kilbride of West Norriton, his sister Nancy Daubert of Hummelstown, PA, his brothers-in-law Joel Nderitu of West Norriton, James, Stanley Nderitu, Stephen Nderitu and sister-in-law Eunice Mutie all of Kenya, and his nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to Philip's Life Celebration Thursday September 20 from 7-9PM at Boyd-Horrox of East Norriton, 200 W. Germantown Pike. A second viewing will be Friday September 21 at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Marshall & Buttonwood Sts., Norristown, PA from 9:30-10:20AM with his funeral mass at 10:30AM. Interment St. Patrick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society for the Kenya Street Children, C/O St. Francis of Assisi Church, 601 Buttonwood Street, Norristown, PA 19401. I met Philip last June for the first and only time, at a childhood sociology symposium in Jyväskylä, Finland, to which he was invited as a discussant. His intelligent and often bold observations made a big impression on me, as did the warmth of his personality. His daught Natalie accompanied him, and she was also delightful company. I was looking up Philip's details this afternoon to share them with an East African research student, only to find that he had died. I just want to share my sadness at what seems an untimely passing, my huge respect for his work, and offer my deepest sympathies to his family. The sadness is sharpened by the fact that another dear Kenyan-American friend was dying at the same time – Njeri Mugo (daughter of Micere M Githae Mugo, Professor at Syracuse).

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Kilbride. He was one of my most beloved professors. I traveled with him to Kenya in the mid 80's, was bitten by the bug, and went on to earn a Doctorate in Anthropology. I have so many fond memories of his classes and the trip. My thoughts are with you and your family and hope that you will find great solace in all your memories.

I have to say we miss you.

I was a classmate of Phil's both in high school and in college. He was a good guy and friend. My biggest regret is that we never got together as we planned over the last years. May God bring comfort to all of his family and friends.

How sad to hear of Phil's passing. I was one of his Bryn Mawr students years ago and have very fond memories of working with and learning from him. He was always warm, open, engaging and asked great questions. He took me with him to Kenya one summer and it was a life-changing experience (in the best of ways). Not a day goes by without considering the "anthropological perspective" which Phil helped instill in me. His life will live on in the many people he inspired, myself most certainly included.

It is with great sadness that I receive this news of Phil's passing on. Through his warmth and friendship, Phil made our lives as 'Kenyan Students' extremely bearable while at Bryn Mawr. May his soul rest in eternal peace and may the family find comfort in all our thoughts of his graciousness.

Phil Kilbride was my professor, my mentor and my friend. He had an amazing passion for, and knowledge of Africa. He also had a spark, and was always witty and funny and a real pleasure to be with. He inspired my interest in Africa and supported me, personally and professionally, throughout my career. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers go to Marrion, his children and the rest of his family.
