I loved dancing with Pierre in Dancemakers, and had the chance to perform several duets with him. What a gentle, outrageous, soul. I remember his drawings and how closely akin they were to his gestures and his musculature. His grin - and many times just sitting together as he savoured a cigarette (Gauloise?) - somehow he'd make the smoke do the same nuanced swirling that his drawings did. I saw him only a few times over subsequent years. He had a fabulous sense of humour - I was lucky to call him friend, and send my condolences to his partner and family.

I have indelible memories of Pierre from the time we spent dancing together, and I can hear his hearty, resounding laughter as clear as a bell . I am so happy to know that Pierre was well loved, that his world was so wide, and that his artist's soul had a voice right to the end.

Pierre was a wonderful friend with whom I shared many important moments in my early adulthood. As fellow students at York University's dance department, as professional dancers with Dancemakers and as occasional roommates, we navigated the late 1970s and early 1980s arts and gay communities in Toronto. We would accidentally meet on the street after we both left dance and he always impressed me with his loving embrace and loud laugh. A couple of highlights: the summer Pierre and I had rooms at the home of Grant Strate and Earl Kraul - oh the brunches and floral bathrobes! - and the time Pierre danced for Paul Taylor when Dancemakers in New York for a week at the Riverside Church. Rest in power, old chum. Love, Francisco
