TRIBUTE TO UNCLE (APPAH)

You have run the race,
In tune with time and space
You captured the essence of life
And lived it to the full amidst peace and war,
Glorifying our creator GOD in everyway
Sharing your knowledge near and faraway
Through every possible means
Even you captured cyberspace and
Mobilised it fully to glorify God
Keeping in touch with people known and unknown
from everywhere and of every generation,
Was a special God given gift
Which you exploited to the benefit of all
Now that you have gone to a better place
And we cannot hear or see you.
Even the memories that remain stored
in every form as well as on disks
cannot replace the life you shared
with the family and the community
but your legacy lives on to be a blessing to all.

May you rest in heavenly peace

A tribute to Rajan Mama by nephew Jeyanthan Anandarajan
(Shared during family service held during visitation on September 22, 2011)
An amazing person, a beautiful person, a beautiful life, a life well lived, ...a light that shone brightly in our lives, Rajan annai, a big brother, , Rajan mama, a father to us, patriarch, counsellor, advisor, church member, chairman of many boards, a teacher, Sir, principal, encourager .. and many more are some of the sentiments that I have heard and read in the past few days since we all came to face, with the unexpected and sudden departing of our very dear Rajan mama(to all Rajan Kadirgamar) from our earthly midst. I stand confident that just as much as we will all miss him, in the words of the scriptures “to him who overcomes I will give him a new name..”, “I will give him the right to sit with me on my throne..” so we will see him one day, clothed in heavenly garments, looking sharper than ever, with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. .
I am Jeyanthan Anandarajan, a nephew of Rajan mama, and I consider it a blessing and a beneficiary to have journeyed with him for more than 4 decades.
His life, as involved and engaging as it was until his last day of his 82 years, had many diverse and defined roles which would boggle many. He was a person of faith with his contributions to the faith community, a devout son, brother, brother-in-law, husband, father, teacher, Warden, sportsman, musician, vice principal and principal administering a school for 20 long years. Rajan mama had the incredible capacity to take on so many roles and still have the time to be very personable and relational. He was both personal and professional, and he excelled at both, which is a very rare combination. He was able to live out this multiple roles, in large due to the support that his wife Primrose (or Baba marmie) and children gave. Right at the outset, as we celebrate Rajan mama’s life and work I would like to thank the family as a whole for their multi-dimensional contribution to the family, school, faith and local community.
To do justice to the life and work of Rajan Kadirgamar (mama) is a daunting task for any one person to do, so that is why many would cover what I miss and here are some of my thoughts in brief. I would like to consider his life in the categories as: a person of Faith, Family Man, Community Man, Mentor, Teacher and Principal, as administrator, encourager and helper to those in need: the outcast, widows, orphans and those who worked alongside him. And in all the roles he played it was clearly evident that it was as if he was ministering to the people in humble service to God. He was the son of a pastor, and his parents’ life and work had a profound impact on his outlook on life.
As I reflected on his life, many bible verses came to my mind; here is one I would like to share. In Micah 6:8 we read
8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?
Rajan mama’s life and work was an effort and dedication to that high calling. He sought to act justly in fairness to all, showed mercy and rendered help to many, and walked humbly with the Lord. Many of us his nephews, nieces and other children frequently spoke about the fact that despite their roles Rajan mama and Baba marmie found time for family, friends, church and relationships. They maintained balance in their life. They did their parts in the many roles that the good Lord placed them, and God blessed their own family with good measure pressed down, shaken together and running over. His family lacks nothing.
His life was an adventurous and challenge laden life. He was born in Chavakacheri in 1928, and when he was just 10 years old the family moved to Malaysia in 1938, only to get caught in the middle of the Second World War.
His role as a family man started at the young age of 15 when he held his first job as an Apprentice Clerk under Japanese rule. As the oldest son, he became aware of the needs to take care of a large family with their basic needs. Later he would relate to us many stories about this time there in war time Malaysia. If I were to relate some of them we will be here till midnight. He would relate that they lost 4 years of schooling during the war time. In the grand scheme of things, God restored that lost time since his advancement in his career to the position of a Principal was a rapid one.
After returning from Malaysia, he resumed his studies at Jaffna College, and then he moved on to Madras Christian College, Tambram where he completed his B. Sc. Degree. His brother-in-law Anandarajan, his son Katpagan anna, my brother and I were all residents of Heber hall. At many get togethers he would sing the Hall song: “ Way down in Tambaram, there’s old Heber Hall, there’s not another one no, not at all”.
He started his teaching career at Jaffna College where he took on many roles. During this time he being a devout son/brother opted to go for intermarriage and on April 27, 1957, two marriages took place on that day. Baba marmie was a teacher at St. John’s, and I don’t think she fully realized the adventure that she was getting into, but I am sure that she has enjoyed every bit of this journey. Baba marmie had to step up to the role of a sister, sister-in-law, mother, and principal’s wife in fulfilling her role as well as supporting her husband with his interests, aspirations and obligations. He had to make frequent trips to the USA as part of his responsibility.
Their home in Vaddukoddai was a home for many, in particular the brothers and sisters of both Rajan mama and Marmie, and for members of the Vaddukoddai and the Jaffna College community. I still remember Nesan mama saying, how Baba marmie was like a sister to her. Rajan mama pursued his Theological and M. A. in Science Education at Teacher’s College, Columbus University, New York, USA. during 1961-63. Marmie had to take care of her own two children and take care of Rajan mama’s father, thatha who was ailing at that time. Thatha, died during the time when Rajan mama was away, which was a huge loss for Rajan mama. He came back and pressed on. Ammamma continued to make her home there for many years.
At a young age of 39 he was appointed as Vice Principal and unexpectedly, young Rajan mama at the age of 40 had to take on the reigns as Principal of Jaffna College. It was a challenging task. He took the role of Administration and led Jaffna College through some of the most challenging times with grace, silent courage and poise. During this time, he faced the Government take-over and the handing back of Jaffna College. We were also witnessing amongst the Tamil community the emergence of a violent response to the political challenges. Young youth were joining the violent movements and various ideologies were being promoted and were being embraced by some.
If I could get personal, with such a busy workload Rajan mama found time to spend with his children and young nephews and nieces to take us to the Kashurina beach, for some tennis or to just sit and chat, have a sing song or go for a walk. I spent many of my holidays at Vaddukuddai on the invitation of marmie. During this time we also witnessed an amazing partnership and relationship between our families. Given that my parents and Rajan mama and Marmie was an intermarriage, this was an example and legacy that Rajan mama, baba marmie, My father and Mother have left behind about unity, solidarity, togetherness, and being there for each other. I never once saw both couples arguing or saying ill words to each other. There’s been a beautiful relationship that was filled with tremendous mutual respect and love for each other and their children and now grand children. He loved my children very much. This morning my 4th child Zaccary was saying I want Rajan paata to wake up.
If we didn’t have people like Rajan mama and Marmie, and the grace of God protecting and sustaining us, I am not sure we would’ve made it this far. I would like to thank God for the life and legacy of such role models who modeled it to us.
During this time, he lost his brother-in-law, Baba marmie’s brother and my father. They stepped into the role to fill the vacant place and help us during the most challenging period of our life. Words cannot express what they as a family did for us. Ten days after the death of my father I was sent to study in Bangalore where my brother was also studying. I received regular correspondence from Rajan mama, which were encouraging and timely. He was full of mercy and compassion. He has done this to many in encouraging them with letters of comfort and solace. He is called on many occasions to pay tributes at funerals, because he had had close associations with so many, and knows there backgrounds so well.
He gracefully laid down his role as Principal in 1988, before his 60th birthday and retired. In his speech he acknowledged Baba marmies role in being an exceptional host who entertained many dignitaries and also someone who made sure he had his meals on time. It was a beautiful closure to the longest tenure of a Principal in the history of Jaffna College. He was aptly chosen to be the registrar of the Theological Seminary where he served for 7 years. During this time he took to gardening with a super passion and turned this wild segment of area in Maruthanamadam into a beautiful place. Apparently during his gardening, Baba marmie noticed that his shorts was too short, so he made sure to unhem it. There was power failure in June 1990 and so many other challenges but Rajan mama always looked at the good side. He said, the air is so clean. During this time, with the greatest difficulty he made it from Jaffna to Colombo for Premela and Vino anna’s wedding that took place in April of 1991. He went back and served as registrar.
He came to Canada in 1995 to celebrate the wedding of Naveena and Edmund , expecting to get back soon after the wedding. When I told him that you are here for good, he laughed. Later he said that your wish has come true. We have enjoyed having Rajan mama and marmie here in Canada close to us. Sometimes I will see them taking a long walk on Kennedy Road in Markham, and one occasion, I gave them a little scare which made Marmie scream, but she was quick to forgive.
He has been a tremendous encouragement for many here in Toronto and internationally as well. They continued to guide and help many in Jaffna. My mother and my own family have been tremendously encouraged by his prayers and words of encouragement. He loved my children very much. This morning my 4th child Zaccary was saying I want Rajan paata to wake up. Thus the oldest to the youngest will miss him. He was a very safe person to have a conversation. I enjoyed my conversations with him.
His recent posting on facebook:
• Hi ! Jeyanthan,Chrishanthi,Dilshan,Leanna,Jeyshan,Zaccary & Olivia-
Good to see you all as active as ever in the 'vineyard of the Lord'
God Bless you all to accomplish the task you set out to do, in good health and zeal.
Rajan marma/paata & marmi/paati

• To all the dear JEYS:We were all awaiting the reports on your arrival in the land of our birth where we spent the best years of our lives. We praise God for all the guidance and protection given to all 8 of you.It is sad to note all the deprivation in everyway that the violent events have caused in a land that was rich in education, relgion and culture.Your presence there has great significance.

We are all watching you with love and praise.Thank you for Chrishanthie's initial detail report and all the photos. We adore the children-Dilshan,Leanna,Jeyshan,Zaccary & Olivia-God blesses them with his own words '.....for such is the Kingdom of God...'
From Rajan mama’s life and work, I draw many lessons and inspirations. First one is that we are to put our entire God given potential to serve God and His people with the gifts, talents that God has placed in our lives. Second, with our passions and interests we are able to and should enrich the communities we live in. Rajan mama’s contribution to the creation and sustenance of the Western Music Society, the Jaffna Technical Institute, the contributions to the SCM, JDCSI, Sports Associations are a few to name here. These were his contributions in his role as a community person.
Next, he turned the task of the administrative load into ministration. He ministered to the people in multi-dimensional ways. He ministered by giving his: personal time, words, letters, resources, scholarships to study and wise counsel. In closing I would like to state the following passage:
Psalm 1
1 Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.
Lord, may you invite Rajan mama into your presence. Thank you and May God bless you all.

Rajan Master had a great charisma, he was a excellent communicator with wealth of knowledge, above all he had tremendous faith in his creator. He was a leader to late Rev. J.W.A clan and took the responsibility on his shoulders along with his wife to look after his parents and specially brothers Sathian, Kumar and Nesan. I knew this very well, because Nesan was my great buddy at that time and I was in and out of their home at Vaddukoddai during my early years. He was a inspiring Principal to Jaffna College. Most of his students admire him for his capacity to communicate with all levels of people and for he is friendship to the old students. His choice of words in writing and speaking was great gift God gave him.

I thank God for Rajan Master’s celebrate wonderful life, a life full of joy, sacrifice and leadership. It’s my prayer that God will give the family and the loved once the grace and strength in the coming weeks to sustain the sorrow and emptiness.

‘Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let it be afraid’ affirms John in chapter 14, vs 28. Such words give us comfort when we remember the life of Rajan Kadirgarmar. In fact, he led such a life of confidence and faith in the Good Lord. Therefore, Rajan Kadirgarmar stands out as a diligent and dedicated follower of our Lord the father, a fantastic example of Christian ministry and servitude. Being gifted by the Lord with the flair of penmanship and eloquence of speech, he utilized these gifts to the maximum in his Christian service. He exemplified a life based on the parable of the gifts, by giving back to the Lord all his blessings the Lord had endowed upon him.

On 5th September 2011 I received an e-mail from Mr. Rajan Kadirgamar, our Rajan Master, many here and abroad would have also received the same e-mail, and it read as follows:
Subject: A humble request
Dear Friends,
This is to inform you that I will not be able to use the internet for sometime beginning this week (today) for personal reasons of health and recuperation. I will like to keep the "inbox" from being choked up.
Thank you very much for your kind consideration.
Rajan Kadirgamar

On 17th September many were “choked up” when received the sad news of the passing away of Rajan Master.

He was my teacher, my class master, our Vice Principal and our Principal. He was also the President of the YMCA. Even though he held all these different positions, my relationship with him has always been Teacher-Student-Friend. To me he was simply Rajan Master the Teacher and even when he became Principal at a very young age of 40, in 1968, he did not lose his common touch. He moved freely with each and every one of us.

It was a very difficult time for him to get used to, being in the lime light suddenly, by becoming our Principal, but because of his unshakable faith in his Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ and his willingness to serve others with a humble heart, he was able to lead Jaffna College for 20 years, as its Principal, till his retirement in 1988.He lead Jaffna College with courage, dedication and dignity.

Many of us, who were involved in many school boy prangs, gave Rajan master enough headaches during his early days as Principal but he never got angry and was always there to give us advice and guidance, He always cared for the wellbeing of others and specially his students and colleagues no matter where he or she comes from, how bright or average one was. He was a disciplinarian, not with an iron fist but with a smile in his face and affection in his heart and wanted each and every one at Jaffna College to do well. Rajan master brought America to us through his famous slide shows. Some of us may still remember his famous phrase “WHEN I WAS IN AMERICA”

He knew his “flock” and kept updating the details of all he knew and was in touch with everyone. Many have mentioned that Rajan Master was a walking Encyclopedia, in their messages and he was also a walking database. We are all aware of the wealth of knowledge he had and was always wanted to pass it on to others, while at Vaddukoddai and recently from Scarborough. He used the internet and e-mails well.

On behalf of the Jaffna College Alumni Association UK we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of Rajan Master. You are in our prayers.

I still cherish fond memories of his love, concern and hospitality going back more than 2 decades. I was telling my children about the days I spent at your home in Jaffna College during my Uni days in order to make use of the library as Rajan unlce and my grandfather kept saying that it was the best library in SL at that time for Eng.Lit books and reference. The days I spent there were very enjoyable both in the library and at your home!

One day I will be like Rajan Paata and Ammama and all of that generation and I will sit with my children and my small cousins and nieces and nephews around the world and I will tell them stories about Rajan Paata the brave heart. A man who loved with his whole heart, a man who learnt with his whole mind, a man who looked into his soul and a man who really lived his life –a man who clearly at the end of his life, was certain about His God.

“A man is what he dreams” and Rajan dreamed well. He was one of the few contemporary gentlemen who inspired me profoundly. There was no retirement for Rajan. There is a time for everything. Now it is time for his final retirement; a time for perpetual joy. God’s gifts are always on loan. We were blessed to have Rajan on long lease. We now return God’s gift with thanksgiving; a gift that will adorn the mantelpiece by the Throne of Grace. Let not my tears dampen the laughter in heaven for he is afeasting with the Father in company of angels. No – we have not lost Rajan. We know exactly where he is.

Rajan did not create for himself worldly wealth. His wealth was his knowledge, his family, the vast array of friends, grateful students and his lasting contributions to the society. He has touched many lives in his short sojourn on earth and will continue live in the hearts of many. His wealth is in heaven where he would now be in the joyous company of the multitudes.

Uncle Rajan was truly a remarkable man. He was the ultimate communicator who could captivate his audience whether family, friends or strangers with his speeches, talks and even informal conversations, and in later years writing and e-mails. He also had an innate ability to relate to anyone and on any level, and was most accessible regardless of his position and standing. His was a bottomless well of knowledge, wisdom and experience that we could all draw from at any time.

We miss his presence, his depth and calm reflection and affection; his loss leaves a great void in our lives but we have many happy memories and moments that we will cherish and speak of in the years ahead.

He was a blessing to all who knew him and was truly blessed himself with a strong and loving wife and family, of whom he had the deepest affection and pride.

Psalm 27:4
One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.

Rajan Mama lived on this earth, so that he will see the Psalmist words fullfilled in his life.

God bless the legacy he has left behind for us. We are comforted and blessed.

He kept at true good humour's mark
The social flow of pleasure's tide:
He never made a brow look dark,
Nor caused a tear, but when he died
