Rasesh THAKKAR Obituary

THAKKAR, Rasesh Bhanuchandra February 24 1935 – January 19 2022 Rasesh was born in Bombay, India to Bhanuchandra and Manorama (Mehta) Thakkar. He studied economics and law at the University of Bombay. A Fulbright travel grant and a full scholarship from the University of Rochester brought him to the US in 1963, leading to his PhD. He was a professor of economics and later taught Indian Studies at York University from 1969 to 1999. He had a lifelong interest in Indian classical music, literature and spiritual philosophy, particularly in the writings of Sri Aurobindo. Rasesh played a key role in establishing and running Nrtyakala Academy of Dance, Menaka Thakkar Dance Company and Kalanidhi Fine Arts, which helped bring Indian classical dance to the Canadian arts scene. Rasesh was one of six siblings: predeceased by Sudha (Abdullah) Khandwani and Rashmi (Sudha) Thakkar; survived by Pragna (Philip) Enros, Menaka Thakkar and Nidhi (Villoo) Thakkar. He will be fondly remembered by his nephews and nieces: Madhava (Kate) Enros, Sonali (Zach) Thakkar, Shivani (Rushabh) Thakkar and Zubin (Tushara) Thakkar. He died at home in Toronto. His ashes will be scattered at a later date. Condolences may be left on the Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel's memorials website.

I have known and worked with the Thakkars for almost fifty years. Their passion and dedication to Indian classical dance was an inspiration to us all to pursue our dreams and aspirations. What they accomplished in bringing Indian dance to Canadian audiences and to several generations of performers forms a lasting legacy to their stature in the history of their art form.

My apologies for not writing sooner. I just heard about Menakaben too. Such a great loss, losing both of them in such a short time.
I met and got to know Rashesbhai during my time volunteering at York University. Because of him, l got involved in the celebration of India's 40th independence, at York, and later in the tribute dinner and granting of honorary degree to Lata Mangeshkar at York. I also had minor involvement when he and Menakaben organised celebration of classical Indian dance. He was such an inspiration to me, and always ready to help in our attempts to advance tbe cause of India Studies at York.
It was my honour to be on the podium to greet Menakaben, when she was granted an honorary degree vat York later. I cherish our photograph together taken then.
Please convey our heartfelt condolences to the family.

Dear Menaka and family,
Was very sad to come across Rasesh's obituary today. He was such a gifted, poised person with a remarkable voice, who seemed to orchestrate events with such ease. My memories of him, Sudha, Abdullah and yourself center around your dance performances, the multi-media programs, as well as the many Tagore-related events that we worked on together with my husband Joseph. He will be missed.
