Richard FLEURY Obituary

FLEURY, Richard Harris "Ric" "Smooth" - State Farm August 29, 1945 - December 2, 2012 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Richard at home with his best friend and love of his life, Heather and family at his side. Ric will be forever remembered as a passionate man who seized each day living life to the fullest. Ric was a very special man and has touched many over his 67 years. A gentleman and generous person of strong character, a natural coach and teacher, there was not a better baseball person than Ric. Baseball was his No. 1 love. His 2nd love, grandson, Jaxon. Spending 24/7 together, truly his best medicine over the last year. Born in Toronto, Ric is predeceased by his parents Wes and Enid and sister Nancy Rae. Survived by his sisters, Susan and husband Taylor Pearson, Linda Yates, Cindy and husband George Quintus, brother David and wife Debbie. Many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews. A heartfelt thank you to all of Ric's devoted friends. Your visits and support, especially over the past two years meant more than you know. To Bonnie Cole, his nurse, you are an angel on earth. Drs. Paula Fishman, Niren Shetty and Victor Cellarius, thank you, thank you. Friends and family are welcome to gather at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. West (at Windermere, east of Jane subway) on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 from 2 p.m. until time of the Funeral Service in the Chapel at 3 p.m. If desired, donations can be made to the Leaside Baseball Association or the Etobicoke Baseball Association, or the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care in Ric's memory.

My sincerest condolences to Heather, Jaxon and Pat. I already miss the visits that we had, reminiscing about the good ol' days of past, baseball, State Farm, Target Rehab, cards, tennis/squash, other sports, and baseball. It seems like only yesterday we were booking a court for a tennis or squash game, my how time and life fly by.
I will truly miss you Ric.

I go back with Ric to my Toronto Star days in the 70's. We worked in different departments but when we saw each other it was baseball talk. He was always happy to see you!
I coached a Midget Rep team in Newmarket in 76 and 77. I remeber Ric bringing up his team which were older than my guys so we could practise against a stronger team.
An all around nice guy! Thanks Ric.
You were always in my thoughts throughout the years in conversations with other people.God Bless!

There are nothing but great memories watching and learning from Ric Fleury. He always had time to make sure I had ground balls and batting practice and even inserted me into the line up for the all star game in the senior league when i was only 12. It was with those Leaside teams in the 70's that gave me the passion to play baseball and the opportunity to play for the team in the 80's with my father and Ric and with their guidance was able to pursue baseball to a further degree. Thursday nights at Talbot was the only place i wanted to be growing up. Ric you were an inspiration and mentor and you will be dearly missed.

My sincere sympathies to the Fleury family. It's been many years since I played baseball for Ric at Leaside, but there was never any doubt that he was the heart and soul of our team. I was proud to be part of his extended baseball family.

Ric was truly an inspiration to all that knew him. I was aware of how fiercely proud he was of his little brother Dave and it shone brightly during his master of ceremonies at Dave & Debs wedding of which I was best man. The title of best man though was just that - a title as it was Rick who truly was the best man. Fiercely competitive in all aspects of gaming....I could never trump him in a game of gin.

Ric was a part of my early life as a teenager and young adult as I hung around with his younger brother Dave, and friends Henry and Frank. Ric introduced us to music (I will always remember Cat Stevens), took us to ball games, played tennis with us, took us for ice cream. Truly a big brother not only to Dave but the rest of us. I know Dave always looked up to Richard. The tennis rivalry was always a hoot! He will be missed by all. Jim
