RICHARD HOWE Obituary

HOWE, RICHARD (DICK) STANLEY Born in Toronto on January 30, 1932, died peacefully in his 88th year on July 15, 2019, at Mississauga Trillium Hospital. Beloved husband of Betty Howe (nee Copeland), for 59 years. Son of Stanley and Lucy Howe (nee Mills). Brother of David (Barb). Father to Scott (Linda) and Craig (Susan) and extremely proud grandfather of Nicole, Jackson, Michaella and Matt. After attending University of Toronto Schools, Dick graduated from Western University in 1954. His love of all sports, especially football, allowed him to play for the Toronto Argonauts in 1956 and the Oakville Black Knights and Balmy Beach in the following years. During this same time, he worked in advertising for Spitzer and Mills. In 1960, he found his true calling as an educator and began to work for the Etobicoke District School Board. During his time teaching, he continued to coach football, wrestling and many other sports, providing as many opportunities for others as he could. He continued to take on greater leadership roles throughout his career, eventually assuming the responsibility of principal for 10 years before retiring in 1991. In retirement, Dick continued to enjoy travelling the world with his wife, Betty. He took great joy in seeing all the places that he had read and taught about in his many years delivering history lessons. Throughout his life, one constant was his enthusiasm for visiting with old friends and meeting new ones. Dick will be remembered for his kind, gentle manner, a constant smile, a warm sense of humour, his wealth of stories that he was so willing to share, his willingness to encourage others to always achieve their best, but mostly for his love of family and friends. Many thanks to the doctors and staff at Mississauga Trillium Hospital for their gentle care. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd. W., Toronto, on Monday, July 22, 2019, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. My deepest sympathy to the Howe family. I was fortunate to have Mr. Howe as a coach. He made me discover things I never new I had, physically and intellectually. His encouraging words and a pat on the back were gold to me.
A kind man with a kind soul. Rest in peace, Coach.

I have many happy memories of teaching across the hall from Dick at Alderwood Collegiate. My happiest of these memories was our time on the Mediterranean Cruise. While Dick and I were working hard (?) performing our duties attending meetings, and chaperoning students, Betty and my husband who had joined us as "attachments" spent their time together.
There are countless former students who have fond memories of Dick, and who benefitted from his understanding and wise counselling. Rest in peace Dick.

My sincere condolences to the entire Howe Family. I remember Mr. Howe coaching us to the Ontario Lacrosse Championship in Owen Sound back in 1971. Although lacrosse was new to Mr. Howe, playing as a cohesive team was right up his alley. When I received a lazy penalty against the other team, I was afraid to head back to face the wrath of Mr. Howe. When I headed back to the bench after the penalty, I got the steely eyed stare from the big guy. Mr. Howe, thanks for being a great mentor and teacher.

I remember chatting frequently with Dick and his son at Toronto Argos games for many, many seasons. DIck was a friendly man who had a sense of humour and with whom I enjoyed discussing the elements of the game on the field. I found Dick to be also a quiet man, but his comments on the game were always insightfful. I remember him commenting one evening when I missed the first season opener ever because of a wedding: "Thank goodness you're here! We were going to send out a search party!" I'm sure he will be greatly missed by family and friends. My condolences to all who knew him. Charise (who held season tix for the 2 seats on the aisle in the row in front of where Dick's seats were for many, many seasons)

Our deepest condolences to Betty, his children and his grand children. Dick will be remembered for his contributions to the lives of many of his students, his kindness, his warmth and his sense of humour. A gentle and compassionate soul that touched the lives of every student and person he met. I was never lucky enough to have Mr. Howe in a class, but he was wonderful with Mrs. Howe in looking after a group of us on the Meditterean cruise in 1971. I wish I had had a chance to see him again at the reunion - but he will always be one of my fondest memories. Rest in Peace, Sir

My deepest condolences to all family and friends. Mr. Howe was never one of my teachers at Alderwood CI, but he was still a big part of my high school life. He always said hello with a genuine smile. He was kind and caring...always making me feel like I was part of the Alderwood family. He coached my brother Tom in football and wrestling, and I know how much Tom admired him. Give Tom a big hug for me, Mr. Howe.
