RICHARD JAWORSKI Obituary

JAWORSKI, RICHARD (DICK) Passed peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the age of 82. Beloved husband of 58 years to Elizabeth (Betty). Dear father of Robert (Catherine), Karen (Graham) and Susan (Bob). Loving Grandad of Jillian, Eric, Jenna and Michael. Predeceased by his parents Henry Jaworski and wife Carol. Born in Toronto in January 1936, he spent his childhood in the High Park area. During his youth, he developed a love for basketball spending many hours at the local YMCA. Richard played for the West End Y basketball team which eventually won the Canadian Junior Championships. He spent proud teenage years as a lifeguard at Cherry Beach where he was credited with saving a life. He later attended the University of Toronto and McMaster University completing degrees in B.App.Sci, BCE, and M.Ed. Richard was proud to be able to say that he was the first one in his family to have a University degree and even more proud of his children and grandchildren who have followed in his footsteps. Richard first worked as a engineer in geology which allowed him to cross paths with Betty. They quickly fell in love married and had children. Richard was a supportive and caring husband and father who would always be there if you needed him. He was always a true gentleman. Richard spent the majority of his career teaching at Northview Heights Secondary School. There, he became head of the boys Department for Physical and Health Education and coached 51 teams in 10 different sports. He had a personal lifelong love for learning and shared this with his students as well as with his family. Through the years, Richard played for many clubs and teams in a variety of sports which included basketball, tennis, golf and baseball. Richard continued throughout his life to value health and fitness, latterly swimming and working out at the gym. Richard especially enjoyed travelling with Betty and exploring the world. His passionate interests were in many things which included history, politics, sports, the environment, current affairs and a love for animals; all of which kept him young at heart and in mind. Towards the end, he professed that, "I don't think I was a great man but I think I was a good man." And he was. Donations in Richard's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 416-231-2283.

Richard Jaworski and I met at the Etobicoke Olympium last year. We soon found out that we had a lot in common, from growing up in the High Park area, playing basketball, teaching at Western Tech. (where I attended) , talking about our Australia trips, I can go on and on. We were shocked to find out about Richards passing in mid November. The guys who knew him are still talking about his soft and gentle manner and will miss talking about basketball and our many similar experiences. What I remember and will miss the most is his soft voice. He will be forever missed. May he rest in peace!

I met Richard at the Etobicoke Olympium a few years ago and it didn't take long before this would be every week, he loved talking about the Raptors Basketball games. Dick would stop me during my chest press and show me how to breathe properly, and told me to follow his instructions as he didn't want to find me on the floor, we would discus the current politics south of the boarder. I am very saddened to hear of the loss of this very kind and upbeat man.

Mr. Jawarski a man of impeccable integrity. I have a memory of him performing push-ups outside on the Northview track while his students went through their own routines. He now belongs to the ages. RIP .

Mr. Jaworski was one of my all time favourite teachers, whether it be Phys Ed or having him as my math teacher. He was a gentle yet firm guide through my high school years at Northview. I thought of him often as I moved through my life, and I will go back and read what he wrote in my yearbook soon. RIP good sir

To the Jaworski family!

I am saddened to read that Dick is no longer with you.

I worked with him for almost three decades at Northview and
coached the soccer and tennis teams under his department leadership for many years. He was always there to help me when help was needed -especially since I was a history teacher and not a member of his Phys Ed department.

He was not only an excellent eacher and supportive colleague but he was always a real gentleman.

I have often thought of him and will always remember him.
