RICHARD McCUTCHEON Obituary

McCUTCHEON, DR. RICHARD MAYHEW He was full of gusto. Passed away peacefully, at home; bravely battled cancer. Beloved husband to Dr. Amelia McCutcheon; father to Jody, Mark, Kim, Scott and Chris, and daughters-in-law, Dr. Praveena Sivananthan and Dr. Jennie Baxter-Ito; loving grandfather to Lakshman, Maya, Kira, Benjamin and Charlotte. He was an anesthesiologist for almost 50 years at Northwestern Hospital and Humber River Regional Hospital. He was a medical volunteer with Operation Smile and Hospital on Wheels Philippines, helping thousands of people. He and Amy loved travelling. He always had a smile and kind words for everyone. His favourite hobbies included writing, reading, wine and coffee, morning puzzles, movies and sports. He was a Civil War buff. He loved music and sang in the Greenborough Church choir. In retirement, he enjoyed living in The Beach, playing Frisbee with Amy by the lake and making friends along Queen Street. He loved doing video chats to connect with family and friends around the world. Richard will be dearly missed. A Celebration of Life will be in the summer. While a loving and supportive father, and husband, he was so much more than that to my siblings, his wife Amy and me. He was a great friend, a confident, advisor and a teacher, Someone who supports, but doesn´t judge and constantly goes out of his way to help others.

Kind and considerate He was an incredible storyteller and an even better listener. He loved people and they loved him back. Forgiveness, love, respect for others...he lived and breathed that every day.

Curious and with an inquiring mind He embraced life with unparalleled gusto, always keen on new experiences, learning new things and meeting new people from any walk of life. This enthusiasm was infectious and I dare you not to share his excitement, may it be walking with him through a medieval village in England, along the boardwalk in Coney Island, or just sharing the simple joy of a great cup of coffee in the Beaches.

While geography and circumstances separated us earlier in my life as I grew older we had the good fortune to spend more time with each other. It is impossible for me to recount all the numerous (great) conversations we had over the years, the meals and bottles of wine we shared, but I will cherish them all.

A great personality, and voice, that filled a room he was a joy to spend time with. While he is no longer amongst us his his presence is still deeply felt by all of us and he will be missed. Sending love to my Brothers and Sisters Kim, Jody, Chris and Mark and his wife Amy who was an amazing help and support to not only our father but us all as well during this difficult time

Richard was a Renaissance Man. He was multi-talented with a zest for life. He was a doctor, a writer, a poet, a singer, and a public relations man. He made friends wherever he went. He´s fun and genuinely felt like he´s your best friend. One time I asked him to cover for me as chair of an Academy of Management conference panel in Las Vegas. During the discussions, he said something that I did not agree. I raised my hand and said I would argue . . . everyone was surprised . . . Richard laughed . . . the meeting became more stimulating . . . The Academy invited him every year, the last one in 2016 in London, England.

Thank you, my SWEETHEART, your BEING filled our lives with wonderful moments, full of adventures and making a difference in the world.

Thank you, my LOVE, for 27 years of glorious (your word) married life. Here is the picture you kept in your wallet for 27 years, and of our 20th wedding anniversary.

Richard and I have been close friends for twelve years. In 1961 we graduated together as MD´s from Queen´s University, then went our separate ways for the next 50 years. Through good fortune, we reunited twelve years ago as neighbors in The Beach(es) after we retired. I will forever cherish several memories of our times together such as going to Starbucks on Queen St. every two weeks for two hour discussions of many things. We trusted one another. Once Covid arrived we switched from Starbucks to two hour slow paced walks on The Beaches boardwalk.
Social events with mutual friends were always enjoyable. Richard was well dressed, well read, widely travelled and well respected. Just ask his neighbors and the Queen St. merchants. I will also remember the timbre of his marvellous voice whether in speaking or singing a solo in his Church choir.
As an octogenarian, I may not become used to losing close friends such as Richard. This is a deep personal loss for me but with love everlasting.

I worked with Dick at the Northwestern General Hospital from 1973-75. I admired him very much for his expertise and professionalism in the OR. But most of all his sense of humour and love for music. I am in touch and still see Shirley Davidson, our former head nurse in charge of the OR. It was a fine group of surgeons, anesthetists and OR staff. Great memories. Sincere condolences to his family, friends and former co-workers. Linda Ward

Amy and Family, my sincere condolences.. I met both Richard and Amy on the boardwalk while doing my daily walk with friends. Richard was so easy to converse with. Both he and Amy every morning would stop from throwing their frisbee to have a great chat and laughter back and forth. The Heavens have now gained Doctor Richard.... Rest easy my friend!

To Amy, Jody and the McCutcheon family
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dick.
I have known Dick since I joined the then small department of anaesthesia at the former Northwestern Hospital back in 1994.
He was friendly, kind, funny, pleasant, easy to get along with and a great anaesthetist. He always had that mischievous smile! I have a lot of great memories from our working together until his retirement.
His memory will last forever.
My condolences for your loss.

To Jody, I am very saddened to hear of your Dad's death. He was one of the nicest people I ever met. I'll never forget how welcomed he made me feel when I first started at the hospital. He made a point of always introducing himself by his first name and engaging in conversation on how I was. I looked forward to working with him and wish I could have spent more time in his OR rooms. I'm sure he will be very missed by you and your family.
My sincere condolences.

Dear Amy, Jody and the rest of the family.
I am so sad to hear the passing of my colleague good freind and colleague, Richard. He was an excellent physician, a gentleman and a wonderful colleague. Working with Dick as I called him, was always fun. We used to see each other more when he was my neighbor before he moved to the Beaches and it was always delightful to meet him and chat when in our neighborhood cafe. I miss his humor and wisdom.
May the Lord provide you Amy and the rest of the family strength in this sorrowful time.
Rest in peace my freind Dick.

To Jody and Dr. McCutcheon's entire family. Deepeset of condolences on the passing of such a wonderful human being. I had the pleasure of knowing Dr McCutcheon when I worked in food service with Jody at Northwestern General and also when I worked in ER at Northwestern General and interacted with him on many occasions when he was the anaesthetist on call.
He was such a GREAT spirit; always pleasant in interactions and adding light to any given day.
May the loving, warm and amazing spirit that Dr McCutcheon was, be omnipresent in the lives of those who regard him well and hold him dear.

Hi Jody, noel here, former nurse in the OR, i hope you remember me. I heard of your father´s passing away. Even if I did not work with him, I heard how great your father was and know how heavy it is to lose a parent. Take comfort from all the prayers from friends and families, and from me, for you and family during this sad and difficult time.
