Very sad news. My sincere condolences to his family. Following his retirement Rick put his birding skills to work collecting data on bird populations and through his volunteer efforts made very substantial contributions to many bird monitoring programs in Ontario.

It was a pleasure and inspiration to have crossed paths with Rick.

After he completed his Ph.D. program at Caltech, Rick decided to shift his research interests from physics to biophysics. He undertook postdoctoral work in the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto. The Department was then located wholly within the Ontario Cancer Institute. I was his research 'supervisor', but Rick was so talented that he very quickly became his own supervisor. Soon after, he became a member of the senior scientific staff in the Department and the Institute. We were colleagues in the Department and the Institute until the age of retirement arrived. He was one of the most impressive individuals that I have known. Joyce and I offer our condolences to the members of Rick's family.
