Mr Hughes was my 10th and 12th grade english tecaher. He taught us all to write the perfect essay which came in handy through my years at University. He also gave me an enduring love of Shakespeare. My fondest memories included him wearing birkenstocks in winter and convincing our entire class to take the day and join the field trip to stratford ontario for a box lunch and Shakespeare. He was a remarkable teacher. I am so sorry for his families loss.

Thank you Mr. Hughes for being such a great coach, teacher, and director. You made my years of high school memorable and kept me coming back for more (I teach high school now). RIP and all the best to your family. You will be sorely missed.

Dear Hughes Family,

Rick was a fraternity brother of mine at Theta Delta Chi. I recall that he was deeply involved in literature and film. The last time I saw Rick was at the 1989 Genie Awards
presentation in Toronto. He seemed delighted and proud to be a part of the Canadian film industry.

I wish you as much peace as possible as you grieve your loss.

At my house in Florida.

Rick taught me grade 10 English. He was a delight. I've never enjoyed a class more. He told me I was very funny and enjoyed the way I wrote. His encouragement inspired me to become a writer. We reunited through Facebook later in life and he came to my house for dinner and met my family. We had many talks about writing. I was honored he was the first one to read my novel and prodded me to send it out to publishers. I was so glad to be able to tell him it is being published in September. It never would have happened if it was not for him. Cheers my friend! I will miss you very much. Till we meet again!

Of all the high school experiences, Mr Hughes' influence moves with me daily & he is thought of more than you'd think, including through the friendships I continue to hold.

I'll never forget he told me not to worry about not knowing my direction, that I'd find myself in the pages and in the words. That was so true, in so many ways. Years later when I least expected it, he was still right. Every single time I read research that leads me deeper into my goals, I remember his words and I tell myself every time - that my first published dissertation in this field I have found a true passion for, will offer thanks to him which I can send, even if I was forgotten.

Thank you for your light Mr. Hughes. Your legacy lives on all the lives you touched, hope this adds comfort to the loved ones you look down on while you fly to higher skies.

Respected and loved by his many students at Sir John A Macdonald. As a grateful parent I saw this first hand. And as the stories of Rick's life keeps unfolding may your family feel closer together in knowing he is important to us and because he is a wonderful man.

Sorry for your loss. Rick was an exceptional teacher. My one big remembrance of him was a note he left when I took over one of his classes in a portable and he said "the lights are dangerous, turn one set on and the other off, every 15 minutes switch them as they can cause cancer". I never forgot that!! He was a gentle, caring man with a dry sense of humour.

He had a positive impact on the lives of so many young people. So sorry for your loss. Rick demonstrated that if you sincerely care about kids, help them to realize and believe in their gifts and give them a platform to dream, they will accomplish and continue to pursue great things.
