Dear Debbie,
I was so saddened by the news of Ricks passing. I know that I haven't spent much time with you since high school however, I cherish the times we shared and think of my high school “buddies” often. Rick was a wonderful person and so are you, the two of you were so lucky to spend 35 wonderful years together. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Debbie, Steve and extended Kirton family, be comforted to know that Rick has been in my prayers since the onset of his illness. Rick is now at peaceful rest. It seems that we have been friends forever since our high school days. John and Mike's words ring so true; Rick had a contagious personality and a unique laugh for sure. I am thankful for all the good times we shared in high school. My fondest memory being of Rick sitting in front of me and practicing his hockey head fake on the student in front of him. And Debbie, who could forget all the Apres Ski parties at your house? Memories to be forever cherished.
We remain friends forever. May God Bless you and keep you close in this time of need. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Sincerely, Claudio and Eleanor Luciani

Debbie/Steve, Rick was one of the best and I was honored to call him my friend since way back in high school. He always had a smile and a funny story to cheer up everyone. We'll miss him. Gone but never forgotten. Never goodbye Rick ... it's see you later. Thank you for all the fun and friendship we shared over the years.

Thinking today of former co-worker and friend Rick Kirton who lost his battle to a very cruel cancer last night. When I met Rick, we worked for the same company. I was a road weary retail operations guy and I was envious of his "wheeling and dealing" real estate activities. Rick moved on but we kept in touch and later, he was good enough to get me an interview with his new boss, an industry heavy
weight, and soon I was hired and learning the craft. Rick would pick on me mercilessly and laugh at all my mistakes and missteps but would always offer advice and assistance and he would always talk me up when around other colleagues in the biz.
He was a bit of a throw back, wearing dark suits with cufflinks and tie-bars and at times, horrendously garish ties that I used to make fun of. I always smile when I hear a Barry White song, because sometimes on Friday afternoons (usually around 3:30) , Rick would signal the end of the work week for the real estate team by suddenly cranking up his boom box in his office with an increasingly loud "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love". It was our signal to drop the pens, shut the PC's down and congregate in the boardroom for a few laughs before we headed home.
Rick was known firstly as a gentleman and a good human being. Many knew him as one of the most passionate and unwavering Maple Leafs fans on the planet, but most knew him as a devoted family man who lived to be at the cottage with his wife and kids.

I had the occasion to talk to Rick a couple of times on the phone from his home in Ajax. He was candid about the prognosis not looking good for him, though he was remarkably upbeat, and committed to fight it. When I lamented the unfairness and cruelty of "that damned disease", he simply said "Well buddy, it is what it is; I gotta deal with it." When I said that "I didn't know what to say" and that "there were no words appropriate" and then eagerly offerred my anecdotal information on new treatments and stats about the increasing number of cases of people who beat this disease, Rick made sure to assure me that he was okay and simply reminded me to call him once in a while just to chat.
I'd like to think I would be so calm and strong if I was faced with such a challenge. I'm not so sure I could be.
I'm grateful to have known you and I'm thankful for your kindness to me.
A lot of us are very sad to hear you're gone Rick, Safe travels.
