ROBERT BURGENER Obituary

ROBERT (BOB) BURGENER Thanks to the exemplary compassionate care of Dr. Zareena Syed and the 9th Floor West staff, Bob died very peacefully in his 90th year on January 16, 2015 at Scarborough Centenary Hospital. A generous businessman in Scarborough for 30 years, he was also known as "Sunrise Bob" for his 50 years of daily jogging to his beloved Lake Ontario at sunrise. He leaves with great love "Beautiful Jean" his wife of 66 years and cherished children Carl (Maude), Christiana De Croos (Alick) and Catherine Newman (Stephen). Bob will be much missed by sisters and brother-in-law Peggy Telford, Jane Burgener, Cory Burgener and Don Ellis and remembered with great affection by the children of his siblings and lifelong friends Janice, Rob, Fred, Sandi, Derek and John Burgener; Mary, Peter and Andrew Telford; Patti, Sue, Steve and Val Ellis; Michael, Marianne and Robyn Burgener; Bev Desaulnier Lawless and Carol Lawless; Kass, Nancy and Megan Banning. Bob is predeceased by his much-loved son Mark. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Mental Health Council For Scarborough, where Bob volunteered for many years. A celebration of Bob's good, long life will be held by Lake Ontario in the spring. Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embark. For though from out our borne of time and place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. -Crossing The Bar, Alfred Lord Tennyson

Our vacation in year 2002 which we spent in Toronto was very special, as Bob was part of it. He showed us the beautiful breathtaking Lake Ontario, which was close to his home, and took us with him on his sunrise walks each and every morning for the two weeks we were there. Our walks with Sunrise Bob around Lake Ontario will remain with us as cherished memories. He was such an inspiration.

Bob was a lifelong athlete. Bob and his brother Fred decided to go water skiing one last time for the year. It was the Thanksgiving long weekend circa 1967. They put the boat into the lake at Balmy Beach. I froze spotting while Bob water skied nonstop the 20K to the Rouge River. The leaves had turned colour, people in fall clothing were quietly exploring the beaches under the Bluffs when zooming past goes Bob, water skiing and waiving to them like it was a hot summers day wearing only his shorts.
