ROBERT BURNS Obituary

BURNS, ROBERT It is with great sadness that the family announce the sudden loss of Rob Burns on Monday, December 28, 2020. Rob passed away peacefully at home with his family on his 70th birthday. Caring husband of Marion for 41 years. Proud father of Megan (Brett). Loving brother to (late) Durk, Sean (Debbie), and Kerri. Loving stepson to Morag. Rob devoted his life to his work in the Theatre. He was a very proud member of IATSE Local 58 and lifelong member of IATSE 873. A gathering to raise a glass (or two...) in honour of his life will be held when safe to do so. If desired, donations can be made to the Toronto Humane Society.

When I began theater life at Pantages in 1989, Rob had just spent 10 years with Cats, oh the stories! We laughed for months at the incredible stories, even as we began anew, building new ones during his next 10 years with Phantom. Always ready to help, Rob guided a great many of us through our early theatre experiences, & yes, we had a wonderful party in that special backyard. I personally owe a great debt of gratitude to my good friend & mentor, the world is a poorer place today.... my deepest condolences to Rob's family & friends, he will be forever missed, but never forgotten!

I am so very shocked and sorry to learn of Robbie’s sad passing. I have the fondest of memories of Robbie during our CATS days together. What a gem of a guy. Robbie, and his dear wife, Marion, hosted the most fun pool parties at their house back in the day and he once took a bunch of us to a electronics warehouse while we were on tour; I still have my microwave and stereo from 1987 and they always remind me of Robbie. We always had so many laughs together! Robbie was not only excellent at his craft, he was also a kind, caring, generous human being who loved life and loved helping others. Rest in gentle peace, dear Robbie, and thank you for rockin’ the spotlight and especially for the friendship and the laughter. You are loved and will be sorely missed. My deepest, heartfelt condolences to Robbie’s dear family and friends. XO Your pal, Janie

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Marion and Rob for many years as my wife is a friend of Marion and Rob. He got me my first call with IA 58 back in 1992. I know he was very proud of their daughter Megan and her achievements.

Our sincere condolences to hear of Rob’s passing to you Marion and Megan. Rob taught me how to focus at the Bayview Theatre in the early apprenticeship days. A lighting genius.

He was our next door neighbour on Clifford Court.
I remember playing many games of pick up ice
hockey in his backyard. Sorry that he is gone.

The world is a dimmer place with the loss of Robbie. I hold him fondly in my memories of our time creating some of the best theatre that Toronto ever saw. He was an example to all of his IATSE and Canadian Actors Equity brothers and sisters. May he rest in eternal peace.

I have so much to say, but words sometimes aren't enough.... Robbie was so instrumental in taking care of me in the Theatre and helping me along with great advice all the time. He was easy to talk to, and cared about his friends and family deeply... When I needed to buy a new car, Robbie helped me research the best option for me and even arranged a meeting with the salesman. His fatherly instinct kicked in, and he even went with me to the dealership to make sure no one was pulling the wool over my eyes... it was very endearing... His yearly travels to the Caribbean were always relayed to me with such joy.. The Caribbean will not be the same Robbie.... and our lives without you, will also not be the same.... RIP my dear friend... someday we will meet again on the Caribbean shores in the big sky...

So very sad to learn of Rob’s passing. Although I hadn’t connected with Rob in many years I have fond memories of him and will recall his humour, kindness and generosity, (and gratitude for getting us in to see ‘Hair’ way back when . Empathy and love to Marion and family. Xo

Rob knew more about hockey than anybody I’ve ever known. We would sit in his backyard drinking beer playing “name that tune” and he would get every song and not only that but who sang it. RIP Rob. I will miss you.❤
