Robert GRAY Obituary

GRAY, Robert Bruce September 7, 1936 - December 13, 2017 Most Canadians would know Bruce Gray as the Machiavellian star of the TV series Traders (Gemini Award), but most Americans would recognize him as the hapless father of the groom in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Although he began his acting career on stage in the 60s, he quickly moved into daytime dramas: contracted to Somerset, High Hopes and the Edge of Night in the 70s. A move to Hollywood in the 80s led to guest star roles on hundreds of TV shows, recurring on Murder She Wrote, Medium, Tour of Duty, Falling Skies and How I Met Your Mother. Bruce gained notoriety in the gay community as "Shickle The Pickle" on Queer As Folk, then for football fans by playing a team owner on Playmakers for ESPN. He originated roles in several new plays as a member of The Circle Rep in NYC during the late 70s and has been a multiple award-winning resident director of Theatre 40 in Beverly Hills, 90210 since the 80s. The high point of his long theatrical career came in 1989 when he toured the USA and USSR in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? A published author: Bruce has had articles in the Toronto Sun, the Equity Newsletter, American Theatre Magazine, and in a book Standing Naked in the Wings. For the last ten years he has volunteered in the G.A.T.E. program at Toluca Lake Elementary School. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he received an MA in Psychology from the University of Toronto. For the last 25 years Bruce has made his home in the Hollywood Hills, where he was known to host "fabulous" dinner parties. He is survived by his sister Judy, nephew Randy, niece Wendy and the rest of his family, friends, and Mike. Website: bruce-gray.com

While Bruce - who I can only think of ever as Bob! - would have long forgotten me, I have always remembered the fun we had together in the Drama Society at Humberside Collegiate in Toronto. He was such a kind and supportive friend, in all aspects of school life. I followed his career with fascination, sure that - somehow - it had all started at HCI. I'm glad I knew you, Bob, if for just a brief time.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one. Please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of many individuals who truly care about you. May the God who supplies endurance and comfort grant you peace. (Psalms 94:19)

Bruce Gray. A special friend to us all.

Personally, no one in my life, past or present, brought me out of my shell more completely, than you...you taught me early on to enjoy every moment, believe in yourself, feel confident in spreading your wings, to fly...I will take your clever wit, your unending wisdom, your passions for so many things, and so many beautiful memories, with me always.

Thank you. For the incredible honor of wanting to laugh, cry, love and stand beside me for so many years, and letting me...walk beside you. You are, a most incredible person indeed. You are as good a friend, to so many! as anyone could ask for.

I miss you.

Thanks for loving me as I am, when sometimes the world, did not. And I'm so deeply thankful, for letting me, love you.

There's so much I want to say, I always thought we'd have enough time to say them, but time ran out, for all of us. Which is why I don't want this note to end. It'll break my heart hitting send.

But I can feel you're beside me, gently guiding and reassuring me, like you always do, whispering "...it's ok, every script has an end, just believe that the story of my life, was the best I could have ever written..." Ok Bruce.

Then I'll end our wonderful story together, with this...until we meet again, through the arms of our Creator, keep them laughing up there, and spread your wings like the beautiful angel you truly are, and fly...forever...

Aside from being tremendously talented, and intelligent, Bruce was funny, deeply kind, ever curious and non judgmental. Human nature fascinated him. His work making theatrical magic in the LA elementary school system was his way of giving back. One can only imagine how many lives he changed through his imaginative and dedicated work with those children. He and I gossiped our way through shoot days on MBFGW 1 and 2. Bruce made one feel special. He saw the ironic and humorous in everything. I will miss him terribly.

Brucie, my irreplaceable friend of four decades, a loss unparalleled. By now you'll be having a dinner party and putting on a play in heaven. Eternal love is yours.
